Caught a sneak of the new Astroboy... and man, was I disappointed. As others have said before, gone is the original "innocent" Astro... replaced with the more "hip" and "in" Astro designed to appeal to today's generation of kids.

Blech.

I must disagree... Astro is as sweet as ever... The 80's series was not shown in america... The problem is lack of Astro destroying things... Enemy robots monsters.... Lack of violence is the only thing wrong with these episodes that I can find..... B)

If you want destruction, watch the Dirty Pair. I find nothing lacking in the new series. Sure, the emphasis has changed, Jump, mama, and papa are gone, but this new series is quite entertaining. Even though I could understand very few words, I found most episodes easy to follow. I just play MST3000, and make up my own dialogue. Unfortunately, there were very few classic manga stories used. I myself would have liked to see a new version of Uran & Uran, and certainly miss her tap daning Shirley Temple version of the 80s, and her lietmotif as played on the recorder

Does anybody know the English translation of the lyrics? "Uranu, Uranu" is all I could catch. :o

Noooo.... I don't mean I want destruction Jeffbert. I meant to the kids. Astro is being compared to Dragon Ball z and GT. This is the reason they think it is wissy. Because of lack of destruction and violence. I love Astro the way it is.. I can "interface." :wahah: :wahah: :wahah:
But If you want to get serious... This pop culture has been perverted into a pro pimp and thug culture.. If it's pimp thug or quazi daemonic it was promoted..... Astro is goody good... These viewers have been brought up oppossed to goody good. This is the thug brainwash at work.

Let me be even more honest and understanding, since there is such quiet.
Astro works for the police and the state... In American pop culture at this time... These urban children have been taught that the police are the enemy and the State is evil, and that the Pimp and the Thug and the Felon is the hero worthy of adoration and love..... Do I lie?
Astro is therefore alien unto the mass youth mind set... Anachronistic in this time space... Anyone want to discus this?   :P :p h34r:

That is so my favourtie song! Whenever I put the CD on it always make me smile. I have the CD with the lyrics printed in Japanese ... I'll see if I can find a web copy to translate.

Hey! Check this out! Osamu Tezuka was one of the Lyricists!

Ah, the joys of dodgy web translation! I might have a go at translating it properly when my Japanese is up to scratch. Give me a couple of years.

Sure, they shipped to me in Australia and they don't even list an AUD$ price. Keep in mind that the DVDs are region 2 and have no English soundtrack or subtitles. How's your Japanese? :)

I'd love to have the full 36 DVD set, but the US$1500+ price tag makes me wince. (can't find a wincing smiley, just use your imagination)

I am not worried about the language. After viewing all 50 of the new episodes, I find I can at the minimum, understand the basic plot. Sure, there are some things that make little or no sense, but as I am about to graduate college, and am trying to learn Nihongo (the language, Nihon = Japanese + go = language), I do not think I will be frustrated. I have 3 DVD drives on my pc, so, even if I cannot circumvent the region setting via software, I can change it via the device manager.

I am not in a hurry, though. Although these seem to be limited in qty, I expect to buy sometime in May.
