This movie makes me sad...

Considering the ending, my opinion is that they shouldn't have stretched for 10 minutes. They should have CUT it by 10 seconds
I like the movie, but I definitely don't like the last 10 seconds. They just don't fit for me

The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

I was looking back on some Astro Boy movie details dated a few years back. It gave very brief details on the storyline early before the plot changed and got a new director. I'm sorry, can't remember exactly where I saw it (was searching through a whole bunch of websites at the time) so you're just gonna have to take my word for it.
It said the same thing about Astro being rejected by Tenma and leaving the city, then him getting sucked into this gladiator tournament (though it mentioned nothing on Hamegg or the kids) before going back to Metro City to save the world...from an alien invasion.
That said, I wonder if that alien at the end was set to be the main villian and got switched it over with the Peacekeeper instead when the plot was changed. They must've thought 'hey, lets have that thing at the end anyway, yeah really confuse people!'
Astro Boy 2, that I have got proof on. Although you're not gonna like it.

It said if Astro Boy was a success, they'd be set to do a sequel. But, since it didn't do well at the box office, and Imagi having a debt problem right now...I think it is very unlikely at the moment.
Although I wouldn't give up just yet, since this is Astro Boy after all. You saw how the movie ended, and if they had plans for a sequel, then one way or another it might happen. I mean how many films have flopped at the box office and been given a second chance...? No, no really I wanna know.
We just have to hope Imagi gets some money in its pocket and gamble on trying again, that or someone else buys movie rights from them, if that how it works...
...OH PIXAR! SAVE ASTRO BOY PLEASE!

The next "best hope" for Astro Boy on the big screen?
I have a feeling we'll see an adaptation of "Pluto" before we get "Astro Boy 2."
Pluto could be presented either live action or cg or "traditional" animation, and it has a stand-alone story that works even if you don't know who Atom/Astro Boy is.
Although I really enjoyed the movie (it wasn't perfect, but I felt it was way better than much of what's out there), I have a feeling that maybe it would have done better if it were less "updated" from what seems (based on what I've seen on this forum) to be the "standard" which is the 80's animation or perhaps a color version of the original anime -- and NOT try to convert the whole thing over to cg.
Then there are SO MANY "versions" of Astro Boy -- depending upon when/where you saw it/read it. The names, the settings, the storyline. Something like "Pluto" could actually work to direct the general public towards Astro Boy (out of curiousity, wanting "more"). THEN a series of feature films could possibly be developed. The question is -- would the public prefer the cartoon Atom (with his spikes and speedos), or this realistic interpretation?
And it also shines a light on the fact that Tezuka was, in truth, a consummate storyteller, as his works don't need to be rendered as cartoons -- they work well as pure ficture. Something tells me we'll be seeing more -- but it may not be the way we might have expected.
And I'll bet there's a demand for a retelling of the entire Astro Boy series in the style of Pluto.

... Why is everyone calling the Mechanical Sun an alien??? Even the people who may have read the manga series like I did? If I remember right, it was made by Ochanomizu and one other scientist and then stolen by a gangster who wanted to use it on a small Thaiwanese (I think that was the nationality) island dotted with villages. He also used it to melt the artcic, forcing the leading people to fork over cash. I remember it only so well because Atom got melted by the Sun and was recovered by a man working for the gangster.

Quite right, UraniumxAtom. For those who are new here, please check out my review of Artificial Sun; I cover all the cartoon versions, including the Jetter Mars one. BTW, in episode 114 Metro Monster, Atom uses that very sun to melt a giant slug.
