Here's a question, if Tenma meant so much to Astro in that 80's show when they were seperated, why didn't Astro ever go looking for him?
Edit: And Tenma wouldn't of hid himself, he loved Astro too much for that. In the Japanese dub when he was calling out to find Astro, he said he was his real son or something along those lines. T.T

Hm, I'm not sure anger had anything to do with it. You see Astro after Tenma shouts at at him and he just appears sad. Perhaps to saw the circus as some place but Hamegg had been very pushy making him sign those papers Astro didn't even know what they were about.
But I think Astro did change his mind afterwards when he was low on energy and Hamegg dragged him away. The poor thing was crying out for his dad to help him ;_; shame it wasn't in the english dub would've made me cry more.
You can see the differences between the two here.

Makes wonder ya know...if Tenma threw himself off the edge of that boat afterwards o_o

I don't see the 80's series as one universe. The first episodes present a view of how Astro could have started his life, but after that episodes could just as well be part of the manga universe and such. I say this because in one episode, it is mentioned Astro was abandoned because he never grew, which didn't happen in that series.
The first anime was also not that concerned with continuity. Astro had a nightmare in episode 2, and yet in a later episode a machine was invented that allowed him to have dreams for the first time.
