I have a webcam but it isn't plugged in right now. The shot below belongs to the Astroboy-collection topic on page 5, it represents a part of my collection. The pirated release came as 7 DVDs split up in 3 cases (the ones you see to the right), the 1st case did contain 3 DVDs, the other two did contain 2 DVDs per case:

I haven't been able to find them on eBay, but I came across this site that seems to offer '03 series DVD releases quite similar to mine:

The DVDs' describtion doesn't reveal much; it's an unmistakable sign for them being pirated.

Hmm, the Japanese episodes I have are different. The episodes don't have the time counter in the top left-corner, and the subtitles are different as well.
I wonder if mine are also pirated, or some sort of 'good version?'

:w00t: Those are so cool! Where did you get them from? I love these head-shaped DVD cases, and the tin box looks brilliant too!

If your DVDs have japanese dub with poor engrish & chinese subs, most likely they're pirated, however, your DVD collection looks so noble it easily could pass as an official release.

/edit: I love the WALL-E toy in the background! :D

Thanks Strange Wings :) I don't mind them being pirated as long as they're uncut. Normally, i'm a "support the official release" kind of guy, but if the official release doesn't give me what I want, then why should I give them what THEY want? I'm not paying $50+ for a version of an anime I don't want.
and Innocent Eyes, pirated or not, your version looks pretty cool. I love the box design! Take a note there, Sony XD Where'd you get it and are the subtitles readable?
Oh, and YAY FOR WALL-E! :D

Thanks! I was very fortunate to get the Japanese episodes. I found them posted on eBay (Australia) for about $50 near the beginning of the year so I grabbed it while I could. I asked the seller if he had anymore available episodes, but unfortuantly he didn't.

Here's some examples of the subtitles on mine:

They're actually pretty understandable. One thing I hate about my set though is that for the opening credits, instead of True Blue it plays the credits of the English dub and for the credits of the Japanese episodes it plays the opening theme (remixed) for the English dub. Argh!

I got that little baby WALL-E a few days ago. He sits on my shelf and looks up at his glorified girlfriend EVE :D

and BTW Strange Wings, those are the old Siren videotapes I used to hire out when I was 6! Seeing them brings back so many memories!

Yep, the subtitles are readable. Apparantly it was a limited edition set released to celebrate the 50th anniversery of Tezuka, or something like that. Another one might pop up on eBay, but I got mine from the Australia eBay site. :)

And yes, I am a big WALL-E fan! I watched it at the movies for the 3rd time yesterday, and am planning to go again.

PS - for anyone with a PS2, get the WALL-E game! It's remarkable!

That looks like a good edition. Original widescreen, too. I thought the Korean release was the only one with proper subtitles. Is there any information on the box, like who the distributor is?

The bootleg with the clock in the corner was made from the TV rips that were on Japanese file sharing networks after it was aired.

The other episodes I really want to see in Japanese are the two parter of Pluto's first appearance. I'm curious as to if anything was changed and I want to hear Uran, Pluto's and Epsilon's Japanese voices

On my version, the subs at these parts read:
- 'I want to take a walk with you'
- 'So beautiful. Look like stars. Is he the astroboy'

To an extend, these subs are quite understandable as well. In certain episodes however they messed up the whole grammar rules, i.e. no punctuation, mistranslations etc. You partly really need a good imagination about the lines' meanings.
Also a minor point: in the middle of the ep 'Uran and famous detective' the english subs suddenly switch to chinese characters for a length of like 5 minutes.

and BTW Strange Wings, those are the old Siren videotapes I used to hire out when I was 6! Seeing them brings back so many memories!

I bought them six years ago as they still were available via sirenvisual.com.au. I kept them because of their rareness and the terrific picture on their spines. :)
