80s episode on DVD?
I would so buy a DVD with the 80s episodes on it if it were the original Japanese episodes with an english dub. Anyone have any idea if this would ever happen?
Bad karma bleeding over years of hate, I finally encounter the Buddha. He sends the autumn of my life into the the winter of nothingness. The winter ice melts into clear water, my heart becomes clear in death.
Since the only source for this series with English subtitles is pirated by FX, I would not hold out much hope. However, when the film releases, there might be a bunch of old farts who remember Astroboy from childhood, and maybe, just maybe, enough interest in the series will stimulate English release on DVD. Nevertheless, because the editing was done on the dubbed version, I hold little hope for "the original Japanese episodes with an english dub". It would simply be too much work to produce, and since it would not be the edit that people remembered, it would not likely happen. They are much more likely going to produce the current dub, if any, on DVD.

So there aren't even bootlegged versions of the japanese series with an English sub? I haven't found any on ebay and usually the subs are terrible but I might want to check it out anyways.

No, there are English subtitled (pirated) DVDs of the 80s series from FX. I know of no English dubbed DVDs of any Astroboy series. Check Dr Frag's posting to page two of New series now on DVD for discussion about pirated DVD. He also provides a link for The Pirate Anime FAQ. FX is noted here as a pirate company. Note that only the first season is available on DVD. <_<
How do you mean 'horrendous'? As a company that makes money ripping-off other companies products, yes, it is horrendous. However, in the case of Astroboy, since the copyright holder does not make an English subtitled version, & I know of no other company that has bought license to do so, who can really say it is taking away the sales of that which only it produces? Nevertheless, I prefer to get my DVDs from legitimate sources.
Well what I mean was that the subtitles are probably poorly translated? I don't care about bootlegs or piracy really.
