I was happy to discover that YTV (tv network in Canada) shows Astro... I watched it when I was young (about in 1985).

But, I wonder if it's the original serie or if it's a new one... (different story)... Or maybe it's the same story but images, colours, etc. was improved?

I don't know. You surely can tell me.... ;)

Thanks!! :)

Im sorry no one replied. I would have replied sooner but Im just checking the board for the first time right now. Yes its an entire new series with modern digital effects and production values. It does look REALLY good compared to the 80's version but it is quite different, with more focus on a broad story arch with Astro's father as the villian.

It has been 4 episodes and Ive yet to see Astro really use his powers to the extent he does in the old ones. I find the action to very lacking overall in my opinion though (just one example: When Astro shoots Atlas with a massive blast -his first real attack in four episodes- they dont even bother to show the connection, just a big flash of light and Atlas falling...). It just never shows enough of the key action.

Also, Astro is constantly overcome by events that are obvious plot devices but dont make sense. For example he gets hit and is knocked out so the enemy can conveniantly escape, yet he is hit equally hard or harder other times and doesnt suffer the same effect if anything. He will also get his arm caught between a thin metal hand rail but be unable to break free (even though his strength is 100,000 hp) just to create a moment of tension and so forth... In the 80's version Astro would run out of power at times but that made perfect sense as a plot device, him being a robot and all..

Im being overly critical though. Its still a decent show, but I just personally prefer the 80's version in more ways. As far as the new ones, if you can, view the subtitled ones. They are a more enjoyable experience than the dubbed ones (the ones on YTV).

He couldn't break free because he was out of energy almost :S i dunno what they told you in the US version but even listening to the raw Japanese version i could pick that up.... Besides the focus wasnt on him saving the day in that particular scene... the focus was on the other major characters of that 2-parter, that being Atlas and his father.

snorkyller, try reading through a lot of the old topics in this forum ^_^ there will be plenty here to answer your questions

I speak french...
Maybe my message wasn't clear because of that... Anyway, thank you for your answers!!! :)

I saw 2nd and 3rd episode... I'm a little bit disappointed when I compare to the '80 version, especially when I saw the the 3rd episode yesterday. The story goes too fast : Astro learned already almost all about his creator ; Things happen too quickly...

And I think that US version isn't really good (the voice & translation). The one who made the voice of Atlas is really good. You know: it's a good actor. The voice and the way he talk show well the wickedness of Atlas. But the other are really ordinary, especially the one who made the voice of Astro.

I was wondering if it was the '80 version ; I was very young when I watched it, so I don't remember really well.

But I would prefer to see the '80 version...

In reality it takes until episode 7 for Astro to find out about his creator ^_^ The US just havent played all the first 7 episodes yet. As for what you were asking about an original story. Well the story for the new series is based on the manga the same as the other series, like the 80's, so it's not really an original story, it's just told a little differently and puts emphasis on some things more than others. They have to keep Astro exciting and new ^_^ if they kept in the same style or story telling we would have 200+ episodes with simillar style ^^; i think variety is much better
