It occured to me that in some 80's eisodes Astro is a little bit different drawn. Sometimes
you can see it on his eyes, on the hairline on his forehead or on his cheeks.

Image ;) I know I'm nitpicking, but nevertheless I think it's interesting. It's definitely a good thing that the makers brought some varied Astro-styles into the 80's series instead of kept him looking exactly the same in ev'ry episode :) B) .

The reason is: Every animation production company will have more than one lead animator (As in, the animator who draws the *key frames) for different periods (so that some people can get some time off) and as we know, all artists have a different style. Hence, the style of art will subtly change depending on who is working as lead animator that production shift. A big japanese production company will probably have five or more different lead animators and thirty or more in-between animators which accounts for the different styles.

*The terms 'key framing' and 'in-betweeners' or "tweeners" will only be familiar to people educated in animation theory.

If you watch and study any production cartoon or animation carefully you will eventually be able to determine when a different lead animator is in charge. Sometimes its more subtle than others but its always distinguishable...

really it all depends on the Director of Animation. If the images that the lead animator produces dont fit the directors vision then they are re-worked. Cartoons like the 80's Astro obviously had a more lenient director as opposed to the one who directs the new series (where the production values are higher and there is almost no noticable variance in character models...).

Ah, I see. B) Thank you very much for your explanations Xenomage :) .
This style-thing has kept me wondering for a long time.

:D Yeah, right. With emphasis on 'small' .
Actually I thought about it of putting the pics there, but then it should be hand-drawn.
I just can't draw very well, and I'm sure Astro would resent my try of drawing him. :D
