Missing scene

Ok, now this is something which really bugged me- I have often seen, on quite a few AB sites which talk about the 80's version, about that series on VHS, that deleted pic of Dr. Tenma/Boynton standing over Toby in the hospital, after he crashed. It's even on this site. I recall, months ago, when I bought the first volume, that this scene was taken out of the English version! I was mad, because I am a huge sucker for touching, sad scenes. Can somebody please tell me what was going on in that scene? What exactly was said? Perhaps somebody could give me the dialogue from that scene? I'd appreciate it.

Btw, was there sanything else cut?

Grrr, it that scene doesn't exist in the English version, then why is it on so many of these sights?

Haha well there was quite alot cut from the "first" episode. Seeing as the first two Japanese episodes were spliced up and made into ONE English episode. removing Tobio's death bed scene and basically all the Atlas stuff. I remember how annoyed i was when i first heard of it and saw pictures ages ago on The Amazing Astroboy site (that was my favourite site ^^) but never got to see the episodes until i found here (thanks for the FTP service Anapan ^^). I remember the first time i watched the episode it made me cry like crazy in that scene

As for what they are saying exactly translated i'll have a listen again when i don't have an assignment due the next day >.< Plus Mum seems to have run off with the external HD and i can't be stuffed searching about 50 cds right now to find the right one <_<

I'm sorry, WHERE can I watch the uncut first ep, like you? I gotta know what was cut, and everything!!! :wahah:

You can see the first TWO uncut episodes by downloading them from Anapans FTP, the address is ftp://ast:ast@207.81.255.224:6872/ but check the FTP thread for more uptodate details and stuff. You can find the episodes in the directory:
video_eps/80s/raw/

Then just look for the files for episode 1 and 2. The bigger sized avi files called "AstroBoy ATOM 1982 01.avi" and "AstroBoy ATOM 1982 Ep 02.avi" are the nicer quality ones.

So this way you can SEE the cut footage but it's unless you understand Japanese translating it will prove more difficult ^^; I'm a bit rusty myself but i'll have a look for the 1st episode now in all my junk and do my best on translating the death bed scene.

hmmm seems i never downloaded the better video quality first episode so my screen grabs are tiny ^^; I'll put some up tomorrow when i have time... translating took me too long because i had to keep rewinding the footage to try and clearly make out individual words argh. Even in the end there was one bit i have no idea still. Oh well here's how the hospital scene goes.

(Exit scene where we see the car crash and Tobio's hat on the ground)

(Enter hospital scene where everyone is standing around Tobio who's lying on the bed with a bandage wrapped around his head)
Tenma praying at the bedside says: "God ....please save Tobio"
Tobio whinces and awakes up: "Dad"
Tenma, happy Tobio is awake: "Tobio, it's you"
Tobio: "Can you do something for me?"
Tenma: "What is it?"
Tobio: "You know dad, about the robot you are making now. Give him my name, Tobio. For him to be cool and the world's strongest robot is what i wish for"
Tenma: "Mmm yes i'll do it... So please get better"
Tobio: "Of course. Do you promise me?"
Tenma: "Yes it's a promise"
Tobio: "Thank you"

Then Tobio mutters something else as he dies and i'm not 100% certain of what it is but i'll try to figure it out another day. Then the hospital machine beeps flatline.

Tenma cries: "Tobio...My only son Tobio!"

(Tenma cries over Tobio and then the scene exits to the one were we see the half-built Astro)

Geez i can't imagine how long it would take me to translate a whole episode ^^; Well i was taking my time to try and make out exactly the words sometimes.... a few bits are probably not as direct translations as they could be... i was also checking with a friend of more recent Japanese studying than me but in the end i got everything right myself anyway ^^;

My guess is that they cut this one because it would have shocked occidental children. I am almost 30, I don't understand Japanese, but I almost cried when seeing that scene the first time. Imagine the effect on a child understanding the language
However I don't see any excuse for the following: cutting about 20 minutes of material equivalent to uncut one is unforgivable :angry:

A bit off topic. I know I asked this once but what program or movie player do you use that has the screen capture function? Except for BS player. Is it downloadable? if it is please refer me to it. Thanks.

Shy, do you have the correct codecs installed for your machine? Most of the movies on Anapans FTP will need Xvid codec to play properly.

Someone should upload this Codec to the FTP. Anyone?

As for screenies, I just use the "Print Screen" key on my keyboard and then paste into an image program.

I would also like to send a big shout out to Haruka-chan here. How ya doing mate! We don't see enough of you around here anymore. Your imput is always very welcome.
