...with the Chicago Sun Times concerning his Emmy awarding winning "Samurai Jack" and "Star Wars: Clone Wars", Genndy Tartakovsky talked briefly about his next project, writting and directoring a CGI/live action mix adapatation of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy.

==============================================================

Q. And after "Clone Wars" starts its second season, you move onto writing and directing the big-screen adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's "Astro Boy." What can you tell us about it?

A. I just finished writing the script. It's a mixture of live action and CGI.

Q. Directing live action is new for you. Are you nervous?

A. The way I wrote it, it's more like 80 percent CGI to live action.

Q. And the plot?

A. Basically, it's just his origin. I'm a fan of the original manga [Japanese] series, so I've tried to stay true to the origins. It's about a scientist who loses his son in an accident and creates a robot version of him. I read as much as I could from the comics and tried to take away the heart and gist of it.

Why?

Sure, why not translate any of the other Astro Boy movies (except for that/those live action ones ;^^) but why not also make a new movie? He seems to be a level headed guy (this Genndy Tartakovsky) and Samurai Jack is a good show (unlike most shows now days). I could tell he was a fan of Astro because in one episode of the Powerpuff Girls, in a pile of toys, was a Astro Boy looking stuff plush (sorry, I don't remember what the episode's name; it had something about a robbed toy store...).

I do wish the movie was all cartoon. But I guess Americans always does something wrong. Those Japanese are so perfect.

I think they mean Tartakovsky may draw Astro the same way than in his movies. Of course it may not be true, but why have the so-long-awaited movie of Astro directed by an American, and not by a Japanese? :o
By the way... is Tartakovsky actually American? I would have said he was Russian by the name :P

Nope, its because everything the american movie industry touches turns to crap. Gojira, the Ring, gundam to some extent and the grudge. the list marches on...

I consider myself a fan of Eastern theatre. I have been watching and often taping Eastern Movies from SBS for close to 20 years now so I think maybe, just maybe I am fairly well exposed to what Eastern theatre has to offer. With this in mind I have to say that Rungu is one of the most over-rated movies I have ever seen. Do not get me wrong, it was definately watchable and kept me interested, but to be considered as highly as it is I just do not understand.

Now, THE KILLER is a brilliant movie. Most of Kirasawa's earlier works are brilliant. Even the "dude in a rubber Suit" movies such as Godzilla and Gamera etc have a specific charm that leaves no question as to why they are so popular even tho in all honesty the movies themselves are amazingly poor. But Rungu? I just.. don't.. see it. It is GOOD. But thats it. its just good. nothing more. Whispering Corridors was a hell of a lot better than ringu, and simillar enough in style to warrant the comparison.

Mind you, the original movie (ringu) was a hell of a lot better than that repulsive American Remake. Talk about totally missing the point. Sheesh. THat is one of the worst remakes I think I have ever seen.

If anyone cares to tell me why they think the ring trilogy is reguarded so highly I would be most interested to hear from you.

And just to show this is not a total thread hijack, I believe that if anyone had to take Astroboy to the big screen outside of Japan it should be Tartakovsky. He is imo the best in his field getting around today. I also believe that Brian Henson is involved somehow and that even adds to my enthusiasm. I am remaining "cautiously optimistic" about this movie.

Tartakovsky's Samurai Jack show is awesome and to tell you the truth I'm a little worried that Tartakovsky having a tough assignment of doing a liveaction/CGI flick will get unfairly criticized for this if it turns out bad. It's going to be tough to do a live action action Astroboy and make it look nice. How much money are they getting to make the movie?
