(Sorry, I meant Astro, not Astor, and $1000 instead of $1500... but I could not find way to edit message title, or delete message once posted, only edit text in body of message... so sorry...)

I just received this email from a friend in Japan who looked into the availability of the full complete original b&w Astro Boy 60's series on DVD for me...

Rem,
I looked around Astro Boy DVD sets on amazon.jp.
Unfortunately, all of them are Region 2 (for Japan, Europe, Mid-East, Egypt), and the series are only for Japan (no subtitles)... I looked into Region Code. It says Region 1 (for US, Canada) cannot be played by Japanese DVD Player. So, maybe same thing happens when you play
Region 2 by your DVD player. I'm sorry it is not a good news... I loved to watch Astro Boy on TV when I was a kid.

B&W DVD Box set
#1 (episode 1~30)
#2 (31~60)
#3 (61~93)
#4 (94~126)
29,610yen each (about $250 each)

It's unfortunate. A good number of DVDs in Japan come with English subtitles and getting a region free dvd player is no longer particularly expensive or hard to come by.

Its really hard to say sometimes how expensive things will go for in Japan, but generally speaking, 'luxury' items like CDs or DVDs are very expensive, often going for 3-4 times what they would cost here, such that a single CD might cost over $30.

Still, those prices (yes, I was looking at the boxes on cdjapan) are completely outrageous and essentially unaffordable unless you are a super-fan!

I say we should publish our own DVDs of the 1960 Astroboy for the price of recordable DVDs  That would teach them to exploit Astroboy :wahah: If there are no more copyrights it could just work :D

Woah! they actually exist! SW333T!! I did not realise they were still out there. This is joygasmic news for all Astro Fans!

Right. I am starting up a collection now. How many people would be willing to pay for a share of this set? I have the equipment to "back up" these DVDs, and as they are not actually available here I am pretty sure the whole legal side is pretty washy about that. So we all pitch in I get the set, and then everyone else here holds onto a "backup" of the set for me in case of, you know, the house burns down or whatever.

Not to be down on the idea of 'backing up' these episodes, but if you are already looking at this kind of money, you ought to be looking into contacting US companies with an interest in releasing material like this (who did the Gigantor set? Rhino?) Although there have been a few cases of artists/companies being fidgety about having their material released in the US, I doubt this rule would follow for Astro Boy. It even makes sense following the two Astro Boy games that were released. It is time for a western release of this anime--this should be evident by the current crop of DVD box sets collecting anything and everything that has ever been broadcast on TV. There are in truth a lot of companies releasing anime and most of them will certainly acknowledge Tezuka, its pretty unreasonable to think this situation is hopeless to a point of having to spend a couple thousand dollars just to end up with some lowsy dvd-rs.

I was wondering if anyone was going to pounce the poor newbie for his leet. He found the info anyway Rock. he's been around the boards and checked.

I have to admit I find leet quite entertaining, but only when it is done a lot better than this. and ONLY when its a highlight, not an entire message.
