It looks like Tezuka had used a too sharp kind of ink as he drew this manga.
What is that character on the right below?
It appears to be a substitute for this one:
Another character to emphasize light-hearted moments I guess.

Tezuka did that kind of self referencing alot. Evan in his anime. In the 60's episode
Cobalt, Astro narrates the intro to the story in front of a live action background of the Mushi Productions studio, and during the fight scene between Cobalt and some monster bots, the characters go outside the frame of the film and then go back in again.
I love Tezuka's since of humor.

Funny things include: The noses poking through the video screens, the opening of doors to step out of clouds of smoke, and the holes in Dr. O's nose when arguing w/ Duke Red's character.

Thanks Otaku, that's awesome. It's cool that he managed to put that kind of humor in one of the darkest Astro stories.
Great comic relief.
