Hi everyone,

I am new here.. and I have a question that has been racking my brains.. This is a long shot and I hope someone can help.

In an episode of Astro Boy (you will have to forgive me on th sketchy details as it has been nearly 20 years since I watched it) Astro Boy was fighting a bunch of roller skating robots... everytime you saw these robots a piece of classical music was played. Can anyone tell me what the name of the musical piece was?

The episode was The Robot Vikings, and the piece was "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Edvard Grieg. Later on he was doing a bull-fighting scene with them, and the prelude from "Carmen" by Georges Bizet was played. But most of the scenes used the piece by Grieg. B)

Better check whether angel_nz has seen the English or Japanese version as the musics are not the same However I happen to know the English one (the one DrFrag gave), but not the Japanese one
Oh by the way, I have "In the Hall of the Mountain King" if someone is interested

The 80s series was characterized by its use of classical music.

After already having viewed the English dub of this, I was pleasantly surprised to see some differences.
Ricard Strauss' "Thus Spake Zarathustra" (better known as the theme to S. Kubrik's '2001' is the musical accompaniment to Astroboy's birth (awakening), while the dub version produced for English speakers uses Franz Liszt's "Le Prelude". But, more than that there are quite a few scenes that were edited out of the dubbed version. Moreover, while the subtitles call him 'Phillip', one can clearly hear his name is 'Tobio' ('Toby' for the dub), just as the sub for his dog is 'John', but the audio (and the English television dub) is clearly 'Jump', or 'Jumpa'. Jump initially rejects him, probably because he has no human scent.

The episode Red Cat used parts from Carnival of the animals, Robot Land used parts from Swan Lake, just to name a few.

My favourite is played in The Monster of Clarken. Some of the peaceful fish scenes play Aquarium from Saint Saens' Carnival of the Animals.

Also, when Astro is created and gets up from his table, the German dub has heaps better music. I think it might be Thus Spake Zarathustra from 2001 A Space Odyssey. The English version has some nondescript classical piece.

I think this might be Franz Listz's 'Prelude'. It also features in the french dub of 'The Birth Of Astro Boy'.
I am more fond of this classical piece for Astro's awakening. The music starts with soft strings, and as soon as Dr. Boynton pushes the button for the energy transmission, the music's increasing itself by adding some heroic trumpets and horns.
When Astro gets off the table and get called by otousan, the music changes back to the string section to carry on with soft melodies again. Very dynamic, IMO.

'Thus Spake Zarathustra' always reminds me on '2001 Space Odyssey' and on Monty Python's parody of a certain scene of that movie (the one with the bone got thrown in the air and changing itself into a space ship).
By no means a bad soundtrack for Astro's awakening since it's very heroic too, but I like Franz Listz's 'Prelude' a lot better because of the increasing musical dynamic during Astro's creation.
Apart from that I'm biased by my childhood, I know .

In that case I suppose O Fortuna would be overkill.
