A few weeks ago I mentioned that I found the 1980s Astroboy DVD set on ebay for $50. They just arrived today and here's what I got:

"Astroboy Deluxe DVD Collection" 11 DVDs throughout 3 standard size plastic DVD cases. Plus a loose booklet with info on Tezuka/Astroboy. They didn't come in a "box set" type box, just the 3 cases loose marked vols 1,2,3. I checked the contents of the cases and all 11 DVDs are present and accounted for. Also these are region 4 and have the Madman logo on them. I haven't tried to play the DVDs yet, I'll post a brief update in this thread after I check them out.

So it looks like I did indeed snag the Aussie $150 USD Astroboy set for a 3rd of the price! :wahah:

I'll take some pics as soon as I find my digital camera

I was able to play one of the DVDs on my computer and works great. Unable to play it on my PS2 yet, which brings me to a couple questions:

1. the bottoms of these DVDs have a purple tint to them. Are PAL DVDs supposed to be like that or do I have bootlegs? (I don't care if they're bootlegs, the video looks good enough for me. :P )

2. I have a USA NTSC (region 1) PS2, does anyone else who has imported these DVDs know how to play these on a US PS2? I can't get my AR2 to work with then and apparently DVD Region X doesn't play PAL DVDs on US PS2s.

All my PAL DVDs have a silver back, but so do the bootlegs. The only ones I can find with a purple back are my blank DVD-R's.
One of the best checks for bootlegs is lack of region encoding.

I don't know much about the PS2, but this might help. Oh, and make sure your TV can display PAL images (if it can't you'll probably get distored pictures and loss of vertical hold).

Here's another fairly cheap set, although I'm sure the price will rise over the next week.

That last one shows the underside of the DVDs. I guess I didn't get the colouring in good but you get the idea.

Weird ... none of those cover images are used on the Madman release, although the style is identical.

The first cover there is the same as the Madman DVD booklet. The second is the same as volume 1 of the Manga VHS release. The third is the same as volume 2 of the Siren VHS release.
The image on the disc itself is the same image as disc 3 of the subbed bootleg DVD.

What a mix!

I watched the first episode "Birth of Astroboy", and it's all english dubbed. (I don't like watching subtitled anime)
The disc I photoed is disc 1.

I'd really like to see a DVD set of the Canadian dubs. They made the series less comedic and a little more realistic. Normal names instead of the silly Dr. Elefun, Daddy Walrus, etc. Also as I recall from the Canadian dubs Dr. Balfus (aka Tenma) died or something, leaving Astro alone. He is taken to the Robot Circius where a girl gives him his famous red boots, and is eventually rescued by his new guardian, Dr. Peabody (Elefun).

This is why I don't get how they could place Astro vs. Atlas before the Robot Circuis, since Robot Circuis is part of the intro story. Maybe that's why Tezuka shuffled the episodes for the US release.
