I don't know if this has been mentioned, but there was a live-action series of Astroboy in the late 50s.

The pilot episode is available on EBay:

But I thought it was a movie, not a series...?

It's the first time I see some pictures though. I don't know about you, but I think I'll stick with the anime series...

 That's hilarious. I'm gonna have to buy that just for the campiness of it. I'm also an Astro completest so I need that plus the 70's Jetter Mars version. I do have the begining theme to the '59-'60 live action series on cd. That dvd on ebay is for the '62 pilot for the 60's anime, note the different costume than the other pics with the scarf wearing Astro.

'Translated' version of live action :D

 Thank you so much for translating this page. It appears Tezuka used footage from the first part of this series, the ZZZ gang, for his '62 pilot for his 60's anime, which is availible on ebay. Note how this series is like chapter serials, each story lasting 13 episodes. I bet each episode ended with a cliff-hanger. Also, it's a good thing I can read some Japanese alphebetical characters. Because story 3 says Volume of U ra n Cha n/Uran-Chan  and Atom. I wonder what she looks like in live-action. If I ever find this series for sale, preferably not a bootleg, I'll buy it.

It's amazing looking at that and comparing it to today's computer capabilities, you really get a shock that the space of time between 58-60 and 05 isn't that wide after all.

Still it seems wishful thinking that we'll ever see a modern live action Astro Boy that does the whole Jondrah any justice artistically or faithfully.

For the live action DVD set, there is an appropriate thread for it:
