Does someone else happen to get that feeling? You wake up in the morning after a full night's sleep, and for a short glimpse of a second you cannot remember about who or even what you are.









In the '03 ep 'The Lost Memory' Astro had to go through that particular state of mind during one whole day. Amnesia must be very hard to cope with (also Livian could tell about it).



The only difference is that human amnesias can't be fixed that easely as it's the case for robots ( in regards to electro shock treatments, lightning strikes etc. ). Sometimes just time is able to provoke any healing effects for gaining one's memory back.
It makes me feel scared about how little we still know about human brains in general yet. Also I doubt there'll ever be a kind of computer that will be functioning in the same way as a human brain.

It has happened a few times to me. The alarm clock rings, I wake up to go next to it, then I wonder what I am supposed to do with it (what is it anyway)
Once, I switched it off, then sat on my bed. My head was completely empty for some time (maybe 1-2 minutes). Remembering which day of the week it was hadn't even a meaning, as the sequence monday-sunday had vanished from my mind too
Another time, I woke up, switched off the alarm clock, then went back to bed and fell asleep. To be precise, I don't exactly remember that. I reconstructed it from fractional and vaporous remembers. In fact, I hadn't left my sleep state.

This led me to remember a very old experiment I had done, maybe 20 years ago. I had seen in a TV show someone having amnesia. I thought it was impossible, because I knew that when I experienced something it became a part of me.
So I did an experiment. A morning, when waiting for the bus, I watched a leaf whirled by the wind. I raised my level of attention very high, and imprinted every detail in my memory: where was the leaf, in which direction it went, the amplitude of the whirl, everything.
For years I remembered everything very well (mostly because I thought about it quite often). Then over the years it began to fade. Now I can remember the leaf whirling, but I am not exactly sure about the whirling direction: clockwise or counter-clockwise? Had it reached the left road? or the right one? I am sure I had imprinted those details too. Therefore, the experiment proved me that amnesia was possible, although it took easily 10 years

I also saw a very good movie about memory: Memento. The scenario is quite common, and is in fact completely uninteresting. Only the non-linear way the scenario is depicted is the whole point.

What you just described sounds to me like a state of noctambulism. I remember having had a similar experience a few years ago: apparently I had left the bed in the middle of the night for closing my sleeping room's window, and as I woke up the next morning I was puzzled by the fact that the window was closed now since I had intented to keep it open during the night (it was a a hot summer month). Even at breakfast I still couldn't remember whether having opened it or not, it wasn't before midday as I vaguely remembered short glimpses of my consciousness indicating me that I actually had closed the window.
I remember how relieved I was that the memory of this incident came back, even if it was only fragmentary. It's an unpleasant imagination about having someone unknown in the bedroom besides oneself.

As for the waking up process, I assume the reason for the short 'amnesia' lies in the threshold between sleeping/awakening which seems to give us some trouble to face the other 'reality'. The leap from subconsciousness to consciousness may not be easy at times.
Concerning alarm clock: I just bought the 4th one last week, throughout a time of 3 years. I don't think I need to tell you why .
Just this: I'm tending to be a bit of a grumpy head at mornings.

Yeah, memory can be very tricky. As far as I'm concerned: the harder I'm trying to remember something, may it be a bird flying, a particular movie's character, a french sentence by Astro , the more I seem to lose the memory of it. I think it's a question of freeing one's mind, thus, memorized actions might reappear again.
My brother once told me about the human brain memorizing even the slightest things in one's entire life, it just so happened that the memory is lacking accessibility. Although he said it more in the witty way I think there's lying some essential truth in it.

I never heard from that movie before, but the plot summary is quite interesting. As what I've gotten, the story's about a guy suffering at amnesia since his wife's death, and he's trying to find her murderer just by the help of photographs and tattoos.
Hmmm, the DVD's cover reminds me at Spaceball's 'now now' - scene.

I don't think sleep walking is really the type of amnesia that you were talking about, but last year I had started sleep walking alot. It concerned me because I had no memory of it. While asleep I had even walked up and down my stairs. I guess my brain had memorized the foot movements. The morning after my parents had told me what happened. I was afraid if this went on, I could be injured or it can even result in someone else being injured.

If you have the DVD, there is an option to play the movie the 'right way', and it pretty much makes the whole thing pointless. The fact taht the story is told backwards is the perfect tool to acompany the concept of the short term memory loss the main protagonist suffers from. It is an excelent movie. I really got a kick out of watching it.

I think I was not clear: I love the movie The first time I saw it I was lost for half an hour, then I understood the whole thing. At the end of the movie, I was loving it. At the same moment I thought the scenario by itself was not really interesting, what made it really good was this non-linear presentation of the scenario ( which by itself is linear ) .

Being lost after sleeping never happened to me. I've never been sleepwalking either and I'm so glad!

Interesting topic. I do remember my family laughing at me one day after seeing me sleepwalk the previous night. My mother's friend saw me walking toward the hotel window and asked me where I was going. I guess what I had said was somewhat humorous. "I'm going to go jump on the trampoline." >o< She laughed, and told me that I was going in the wrong direction. Apparently, I said "Oh, I guess so..." And I sat down on my bed.
I wonder how I did that. I don't remember it at all. But I'm glad I don't do that at home. "Ouch!" I have the top bunk anyway. n_n
