What are your favorite manga stories?

Postby Astro Forever » 18 years ago

Okay, it's about time I dig more into the manga. I only have one volume so far. However, I don't want to order Dark Horse's 23 volumes all at once. I want to make sure I enjoy reading them first. :)

Which ones do you suggest? I want to read "The Greatest Robot on Earth", so I'll order volume 3. I already own the first story, "The Birth of Astro Boy" so I'll skip volume 1, at least for now. That's where the choice becomes thougher.

I took a look at Dark Horse's previews and found the list of the stories in each volume, but I'm not sure which ones could be the most interesting. Maybe the stories involving Tenma? Argh...!

So, which are your favorites? :)

I used to have some french astroboy mangas published by Glénat a decade ago.
One particular story I still can recall having read was 'Captain Astro', the equivalent to the 80's ep 'Astro Fights Aliens'. Back to that time, the manga's drawing style didn't left the same strong impression on me as it was with the 80's anime. But regardless of that fact, mentioned story still enters my mind first when I think back to my first astroboy mangas I've ever read.

I enjoy Astro vs Atlas in one of the later volumes. It's much different from the episode from the 80s, though Atlas' design is the same. It's also a very short manga story, only 7 pages or so. And also pretty funny, which is strange, considering how depressing and dramatic they made the episode.

Plus, little Atlas is so cute. :D

Volumes 22 and 23 have lots of miscellaneous short stories. There's some good variety.

I don't expect the manga to grab my attention as much as the 80 series either, but I'm really curious to know what Astro was really about back then.

Interestingly, the volumes I'm less curious about seem to be those in which all the stories were put into the series, except for "The Greatest Robot in the World", obviously.

Hey, what happened to your signature?

Funny, they seemed to be among the least interesting ones at first glance. :D Thanks for the tip.

 It's the opposite with me, I'd like to read the manga stories that provided the basic storyline for the 80's eps. It would be interesting to know which story details they've omitted and which elements they've added to the series afterwards. Oh, now I recall about 'Lilly On Peligro Island' being another manga story I've read (surely it had been entitled differently, but I can't seem to remember the story's french title anymore... it's so long ago :d oh: ).

Hey, what happened to your signature?

:) It's there again, I've removed it a few days ago because I intented to use something else instead, but it didn't fit with my expectations, so I better stick with it. After all, it's the one I like most. I would miss it anyway.

I think what I said wasn't really what I thought.  :whistling:

I am also interested to see how the stories evolved. :D I think that the volumes that I happened to find not as intriguing included the stories that weren't the most appealing to me. Somehow those stories seemed to be all together in some volumes. I mean, buying a volume with 3 stories that I know and didn't think were the most interesting (to me) is not how I want to start reading the manga, unless of course somebody tells me there were interesting bits missing in their anime version. I don't know if I make sense though.

Funny, I almost changed my signature recently myself. ;)

BTW... I love your location!!!! :w00t: Love that music!

This was in volume 23, & featured Chibi-Atlas being verynaughty. BTW, there was a thread devoted to this topic. The original Atlas story was in volume 18. :astro:

Capt. Atom was Atom's 0th adventure. By that, I mean it predated his being the main character. Volume 15 has it.
