Funniest Astro moment

Postby Ataru Moroboshi » 18 years ago

Today I have discovered the funniest Astroboy sequence I've seen to date. Volume 19 of the manga has been published today in Spain, and on the "Return of Astro" story, I've seen the best succession of slapstick I've ever seen on an Astroboy manga or anime. It's a sequence full of black humour, as we see poor Astro being destroyed about 6 or 7 times... And it's helluva funny!!!:

On page 171, Astro goes back to life after being nearly destroyed by Blue Knight (who soon recieves his punishment). But Tenma is not there to help Dr. Elefun for the operation, and once he gets life, he goes bezerk and starts destroying everything. On page 172, the Ministry of Science is wobbling like a pile of blancmange, Elefun recieves a Lum-style zap from Astro, who previously has knocked the heads of two sciencists, Elefun is splatted by a wall, getting funny wounds, like the Coyote. Then, Astro focuses his attention on Daddy Walrus, who was witnessing the event. As the face of D.W. gets closer and closr to the viewer, Astro's head blows away, causing Daddy Walrus to fly away, almost naked after the explosion until he lands with his head on the floor, then Elefun lands on him and a big steel pipe lands on the heads of the two lads.
Then, a journalist, "played" by Norse Necktall and his eternal cigar tries to get the opinion of Elefun, but he's in total trance, with the funniest face you've ever seen on a Tezuka manga (actually, Norse says, "Man, what a stupid face this guy has!") . Norse's cigar grows without any explanation. Astro gets PWNED again and again for three pages; Elefun gets to the hospital and gets enveloped with gauze; Astro breathes fire and Elefun is forced to call a guard robot. Guard and Astro fight, and a cloud of debris covers the lab. A sciencist asks "Who's winning?", and another answer "Let's wait for the next panel and see".
Astro and the guard hasve destroyed each other, then Elefun has to call Dr. Tenma, and the story gets serious after nine pages of non-stop slapstick, cartoonish humour and laughing at poor Astro, Daddy Walrus, Elefun and all the gang.

Yes, Tezuka had a downright wicked sense of humour, but I just love it

I loved that sequence! But my absolute fav volume is 23. When I first read that manga, I laughed so hard that I gave myself a sharp migrane :astro:
Has anyone else read volume 23?
