For me, it's the character Astro. He's just too darn cute and loveable not to like. The urge to adopt him and take him home is too great. The stories themselves in the manga and 2003 series are great as well, but it's the character Astro that kept me coming back

You've said it better than I could have. It's the same thing for me.
I still remember your thread (well, I think it was yours): "I WANNA ADOPT HIM!"

For me, I got to like Astro through the prestigous (and rare) Canadian dub od the 1980's series that ran at the STV station my mother worked at. I remember it only briefly, and I recall thinking of Astro as an older brother with jet feet. Unfortunately, the TV station destroyed all their BETA tape of the show, thinking that the Regina station kept their copies. They didn't.
I also got to like the 2003 series for the greatly detailed animation, and for the redesign of some of the characters, like Dr. Tenma. Astro I was surprised by, because I was so used to a littler guy. The other characters that drew me in were Denkou, Tamami, Rock, Uran and Tobio.

Syndrome of "never seen": the hatred to a concept or fact is inversely proportional to its exposure

In other words: some people hate with more zealotry what they don't know

He's an untainted Super hero. Yeah, can't over-look the sloppy cuteness factor and he can make Oragami cranes out of steel plates : )
