So, with regard to robots and space travel, I would say that reality failed to meet expectations; however, there are many other ways that it exceeded them: PCs, cellphones, just to name 2.

Personal computers were completely unforeseen If you have a look in the 1980 version, computers do exist only in scientific places (such as where Dr. Elefun works), and are very different from those we have today.
As a comparison scale, any present low-level computer that you can buy for a few hundreds bucks vastly outpowers best super-computers of the 80s that cost millions of dollars and took an entire room.

Thanks, i wish i could remember where i heard this, someone said that to build a computer that could match the complexity of the human mind you would have to build it the size of Jupiter. I am certain he can was exaggerating, but he meant they were a long way from matching the human mind abilities. In my mind i can imagine voyages to different planets in the solar system and to the Planet Delta that Sparx talks about. I can also measure the size of the Universe, and other things because those things interest me. Computers can functions at speeds approaching 10 to the 15th power, which means they are many powers of 10 faster than the human mind, they lack one thing that humans have, and movies like "Invisible Boy" talk about the horror of a computer that had consciousness without compassion.
I love Astroboy because he seems to have consciousness with compassion.

Going off topic for a moment Tonigirl, in the anime Chobits, the personal computers were human shaped and walked....but thats anime....

Anyway, I believe that Astro was a truly revolutionary idea, but I agree that we are quite a long distance from the true potential of AI. I agree with Daichi. One day we may truely be able to make a robot that will stand on even ground with us.

In the anime Chobits, the personal computers are sex objects. Feh!

Stay on subject, this is relevant to my interests.


Personally... I believe AI today is a far cry from Astroboy. Having spoken with various actual AI myself, I find them to be a bit difficult at times. They will often get confused by simple things, and attempting to hold a real conversation with them proves quite frustrating.
But I also believe that someday, with patience and perseverance, we could get it right, we could build a robot that can think and feel and make decisions on its own.
Still, I think people's apprehension about technology, spawned in part from dusty old sci-fi horror stories, hurts progress and might be holding us back to some degree.

Until such a great day arrives as the day we meet "Astroboy", I'll settle for my fictional 'bots.

Robots are getting smarter, not in conventional ways that we view intelligence, but their "nuerology" is making leaps and bounds.
Check out the Boston Dynamics videos of their flagship robot "BigDog" on youtube. He may run on a gas engine and have the calming quiet of a lawnmower, but he's got a great self-correcting coordination system, he's very hard to knock over.
I wish I could afford one and let it run around in the yard.
