Fanfic: "ATLAS RETURNS" PART IV is up.

Postby Legeremain99 » 17 years ago

:D Well guys...here it is...the conclusion to "Atlas Returns" Enjoy, my friends. :D

"ATLAS RETURNS - PART IV - THE CONCLUSION"

Astro and Reno had completed the setup in the lab shortly before Atlas and the doctor had boarded the elevator. The two boys were seated at different consoles awaiting their arrival. Reno was looking over the settings on his console, to double-check his work. He was starting to wonder what was taking the scientist so long to bring Atlas to the lab.

Reno spun around in his chair to face in the direction of where Astro sat across the large room at the second control console. He saw that Astro had been checking his settings as well. Reno decided he’d better ask his friend about the situation.

“HEY ASTRO,” Reno called out.

Of course, the little robot could have heard him, even if he’d called to him in a normal tone of voice. Astro spun around to face his friend, with a smile on his face.

“What is it, Reno?” Astro inquired, curiously.

“I was just wondering what is taking Dr. Elefun and Atlas so long to come down,” Reno said.

“Hmmm, I was just wondering the same thing. I’m not sure…maybe they just got to talking and it’s taking longer than the doctor planned,” Astro replied.

“That makes sense…maybe that is what happened. I guess I’ll triple check my settings. Maybe be then they’ll be here,” Reno told his friend.

“I’m just gonna wait, Reno. I’ve already triple checked myself. My console’s ready to go,“ Astro said.

The two boys turned their chairs back around, so they were each facing their own control panel. Just as they had gotten settled, Astro heard footsteps coming down the hall toward the lab. He could tell one set was the doctor, by the sound of his footfalls. He assumed the other was Atlas, since he hadn’t learned the sound of his steps.

After a moment or two, Atlas and Dr. Elefun appeared, as they walked through the open doorway into the robotics lab. Astro had already turned to face them as they entered. Reno heard them just as they came in, and also turned to face in their direction.

“Hello boys,” Dr. Elefun said, in a friendly greeting, and then continued, “I see you two have everything set and ready to go for Atlas’ evaluations. Shall we begin? Atlas, are you ready, my friend?”

“I suppose so, Dr. Elefun,” Atlas replied, then turned his attention to his brother, and said, “Hello brother. Looks like you’re ready for me, eh? I suppose we should get on with this. Hello Reno, good to see you again, my friend. I hope I can call you that.”

Before Reno could answer, Astro replied, “Hello brother. Yes, I’m ready for you. Anytime you’d like to get on the table, we can get started. Sorry I butted in, Reno. You go ahead.”

“That’s okay, Astro. Atlas…of course you can call me friend. It’s good to see you again, also. Let’s get this over with, shall we?” Reno said.

“Alright,” Atlas agreed, and then said, “The sooner we get this over…the sooner we can all start working together for the good of Mankind and Robotkind alike.”

Atlas walked over to the large robotics evaluation table, hopped onto its edge, swung his feet up and around and lay down. Dr. Elefun came over to the side of the table and began hooking all sorts of cables and wires to Atlas’ access ports. When he’d completed that, he reached above the table and lowered the large upper scanner down to just about a foot above Atlas’ body, as he lay there. The lower scanner was built into the table top. Each was used for a different type of scan. The upper one would scan his systems and connections. The lower would scan his electronic brain and subsystems. It would also show them something like an X-Ray of his skeletal structure.

After Atlas had gotten onto the table and made himself comfortable, he had closed his eyes and become relaxed. He had done this while the doctor had connected and set everything. Atlas was actually starting to doze off, which wasn’t a problem, since none of these tests would be invasive in any manner. He actually looked quite adorable, lying there with a slight smile on his lips and his boyish charm.

Once the doctor had finished getting everything hooked up, he walked over and took a seat at the only console that was unmanned. He sat down, made a few adjustments and then spun the seat of his chair around to face the two boys at the other consoles.

“Alright, Astro…Reno…we’re ready to get underway. This shouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes to complete. Go ahead and activate your equipment. I’ll do the same. Once that’s done, I’ll control the evaluations from here. Everyone understand?” Dr. Elefun explained to the boys.

“Yes sir, doctor. I understand completely. Ready here, sir,” Astro intoned.

“Understood perfectly, Dr. Elefun…ready here, too sir,” Reno agreed.

Astro and Reno both activated their perspective consoles at almost the same moment. The screens came to life and all the readouts lit up. Shortly after, Dr. Elefun powered up the main control panel. The three were ready to start Atlas’ evaluations. Astro’s panel controlled the upper scanner. Reno’s controlled the lower and the scientist controlled all other operations.

Without looking away from his console, Dr. Elefun said, “Okay, Astro…first let’s do a scan of Atlas’ systems, etc”

“Yes sir. Activating the upper scanner,” the little robot replied.

The doctor could monitor all activity on the three screens that were in his master console. After Astro had responded, he said, “You two concentrate on controlling the scanners. I’ll take care of monitoring all of the results.”

“Yes sir,” both boys answered in unison.

Reno couldn’t help but giggle when that happened. It was, after all, sort of comical that they had.

“I’m beginning to get an image of the first scan. It’s materializing on my screen at this moment,” Dr. Elefun told them, and then went on, “What I see is a set of perfectly working systems and connections. In fact, it’s running so efficiently there’s no possible way it was repaired and rebuilt on this planet. This is amazing. Look at your screen, Astro.”

“I see what you mean, doctor,” Astro said with surprise in his voice, and continued, “Atlas’ systems and circuitry are running with such intricacy, there’s no way he could be lying about what he’s been through. My systems and connections are very advanced, but they don’t even run at this peak level.”

“You’re absolutely correct, Astro. It seems to me that this evaluation is a success. Reno…are you ready to do the lower scan, son?” Dr. Elefun said.

“Aw, man! I wish I could see those results. I’m sorry, doctor…yes, I’m ready. I hope you are recording this,” Reno replied, sounding a little disappointed.

“Of course, I’m recording the results and images, Reno. Don’t sound so upset, son. You can take a look at them when we’re done. Go ahead and start your scan,” Dr. Elefun said.

“Yes sir. Starting scan now,” Reno replied, sounding more upbeat, and then,” This first scan will give you the readings from his electronic brain and subsystems. Watch your screen carefully, sir.”

The scan of Atlas’ electronic brain appeared on the doctor’s and Reno’s screen simultaneously. What it revealed made them both take on expressions of awe.

Reno stared open-mouthed at his console’s screen, unable to utter a word. He was so taken aback by what the scan had uncovered. The scientist, even though he was amazed as well, was able to comment.

“Well I’ll be dipped…this is the most unique robotic brain I have ever encountered. The alien robotic repair ship must have extremely advanced technology to have rebuilt Atlas’ brain in this manner. I didn’t think this was even possible. The way it is put together, it’s impervious to just about any kind of attack from an outside source. There’s nothing, I mean absolutely nothing remaining of his Omega Factor. Atlas was completely honest with us,” Dr. Elefun said with excitement.

“You mean I should have trusted my heart and not my knowledge, doctor?” Astro asked with curiosity.

“I suppose you should have, Astro. There’s nothing wrong with being cautious though, son. With a robot like Atlas, it doesn’t hurt to check everything thoroughly,” the scientist told him.

“That makes me feel better, doctor. Thank you,” Astro replied, and then said, “I believe I understand matters of the heart now. In most instances, if your heart tells you to trust someone, then it’s best to follow your feelings. But, in this case, because of past experiences, it doesn’t hurt to use a bit of caution. Am I right, Dr. Elefun?”

“Very good, my boy…I’m proud of you. You’re learning more of what it means to be human, every day,” the doctor assured him.

Astro’s cheeks turned a bit crimson, as he felt slightly self-conscious about the praise he’d just received. He swung his chair seat around to face the console, hoping Dr. Elefun hadn’t seen his embarrassment.

The scientist got a look of curiousness, and said, “Reno…I haven’t heard you say anything. What are you doing, my boy?”

When Reno didn’t answer, the doctor turned about in his chair to see what the young man was up to. What he saw almost made him burst out laughing. Reno was still staring at the screen on his console, with the image of Atlas’ brain before him. His mouth was open and he had an expression of utter amazement.

“Reno!!...Reno!!!...What are you doing? Trying to catch flies, my boy?” Dr. Elefun called to him, a little louder than before.

This brought the boy out of his reverie. He sounded startled, when he answered, and said, “Huh?...What?...Oh crap!! I’m so sorry, Dr. Elefun. I didn’t mean for that to happen. It’s just that…Atlas’ electronic brain is so phenomenal, I lost touch with reality.”

“It’s okay, Reno,” the doctor assured him, and then continued, “It is quite astounding isn’t it, son? I was most amazed myself. The circuitry is so intricate and it’s routing is extremely complex. It’s almost as if the aliens rebuilt it on the molecular level. Their technology must be so far ahead of our own…it’s like we’re in the Stone Age, compared to what they’re able to accomplish. I’ve never seen anything like it. Nor did I think that something like this was even possible.”

“I can see that, doctor. I can’t believe this design myself, but there it is on the screen in front of me. Astro…you’ve got to see this. Can you come over here for a minute?” Reno said.

“Yes, Astro…please do take a look. I think even you’ll be amazed,” Dr. Elefun agreed.

Astro had been listening to their conversation and his curiosity was about to get the better of him, when they asked him to see it for himself. Astro almost leaped from his chair and excitedly went over to stand next to Reno, where he sat. He gazed at the screen and the little robot’s eyes grew wide, his mouth falling open at the same instant.

“This…this…this design is impossible,” Astro exclaimed in his amazement, and then, “Yet…I’m standing here looking at it for myself. This type of brain only existed before in science fiction. This design is perfect. Doctor! Do you realize if we could copy it…what leaps and bounds we could make in robotics?”

Reno was nodding his agreement enthusiastically.

“I’ve been thinking the same thing, boys. I’ve already had the computer do a 3 dimensional breakdown of it, so we can see exactly how it’s assembled. I’m way ahead of you two,” the doctor told them.

“AWESOME!!!” Astro said, excitedly, and returned to his seat.

“That’s fantastic, Dr. Elefun,” Reno said, and then went on, “Just think what we’ll be able to accomplish, once we can duplicate it. I just hope the advanced components won’t be impossible to engineer.”

“That’s a bridge we’ll have to cross when we get to it, boys. What’s say we get back to our evaluations?” Dr. Elefun asked.

“I’m ready, doctor,” Astro replied from his console.

“I suppose I am too, sir. Let’s do it. All we’ve got left is his subsystem and chassis. I’ll begin the subsystem scan now,” Reno said.

The boy keyed in the sequence to start the scan. He watched his screen as Atlas subsystem diagram came on the screen. He knew it had appeared at the same instant on the doctor’s screen, so Reno gazed over for a moment to see him studying it. It was quite advanced also, but a subsystem was a subsystem. There wasn’t much that could be done to improve such a thing. It was however, very well engineered. It was also a design they could copy for use in newly built robots. It was a simpler, but much more efficient design that Dr. Elefun planned to utilize in the future.

The scientist had the computer record a 3-D schematic of this also. After he was done, he said, “Okay, Reno…let’s do the skeletal scan now.”

“Yes sir,” the boy answered, and keyed the correct formula into the console.

Atlas’ skeletal structure appeared on the screen in front of Reno. He could see the rebuild the aliens had done was spectacular. The young robotics engineer thought he’d better let the doctor comment on this one. It was beautiful to behold, but he didn’t want to take away Dr. Elefun’s moment of glory.

Astro had turned around in his chair and was watching Reno and the scientist curiously. He had an expression of expectancy, as he waited for one of them to comment.

The doctor was studying Atlas’ chassis on his own screen, and was lost deep in thought for several moments. He finally decided to comment, after what seemed an eternity to the two boys.

“This is amazing!,” Dr. Elefun exclaimed, The aliens have improved the original design. When they rebuilt Atlas’ chassis to the scale of a teenager, they replaced all of his original servos with a much more efficient and powerful design. They improved his hand and finger joints, so they operate with a more fluid motion…closer to that, if not the same, as a human’s. Astro…you’ve got to see this. I’m going to send the image to your screen, so you may stay seated.”

Astro spun back around to face the screen of his console, and asked excitedly, “Doctor…what is it? Is it something bad?”

“No..no, nothing like that, Astro. It’s something very good, in fact. Watch your screen and I’ll explain. Reno…I want you to follow along, also,” Dr. Elefun explained.

“Okay, doctor,” Reno replied, and focused his full attention on the diagram in front of him.

Astro was too excited to comment. This was his brother after all. He was gazing over Atlas’ skeletal structure and found himself taken with the intricacy of its construction. He did not yet notice what the doctor was about to point out to him.

The scientist cleared his throat, and began.

“Alright, boys…shall we get started?” Dr. Elefun inquired.

Astro was so involved in studying the diagram that all he could muster was a quick, “Um Hmm.”

Reno wasn’t as preoccupied, so he replied, “Yes, doctor. Go ahead.”

“Okay, very good. The first thing I want to point out, which is something I’m sure you both already know, is that Atlas’ original design was based on Astro’s. If you’ll notice the basic design and structure hasn’t changed that much. The more advanced improvements are more on the mechanical and operational levels. You heard me mention the far more advanced servos, which were utilized in his reconstruction. Other things, which are not so apparent are the actual joints of the skeletal structure…they have been improved greatly in the ease of their mobility. This allows them to move almost with no friction at all. Something I’ve noticed, which apparently you two have not, is that Atlas has rocket jets within his lower legs, just as you do, Astro. The aliens must have been able to access his original memories and programming, before he was changed into an adult robot. Atlas was not originally created with these jets, even though they were included in the original plans. I actually do not believe Atlas is aware that he has them or I think he would have mentioned this to one of us. Atlas is just as capable of flight as you are, Astro. This would make you two a wonderful team for protecting planet Earth.”

When Astro had heard this he got so overjoyed and filled with excitement, he jumped from his chair and ran over to where Dr. Elefun was seated at the master console. He stood next to the scientist, bouncing up and down in his excitement, about to burst if he didn’t get to say something.

Dr. Elefun turned to face Astro, put his hand on the little robot’s shoulder in an effort to calm him, and said, “Astro, my boy…calm yourself, son. You look as if you’re about to blow a gasket. What is it, my friend?”

Astro stopped his bouncing, when he was finally allowed to talk. He was grinning from ear to ear and had an expression of joyousness on his adorable little face. He exclaimed, “DOCTOR! Do you have any idea what this means to me? I’m going to get to work with my brother! We’ll be able to do everything together. I’m so happy, doctor…I don’t know what to do.”

“The first thing I’d suggest is that you get yourself calmed down and return to your station. Of course, this is a wonderful opportunity. Your brother has checked out on every one of our evaluation tests. I’ve found nothing wrong in any of the scans. I still have one thing left to do, Astro…and that’s to go over all of his current programming. Once I do that, then we can celebrate, if I find that all is in order. So…let’s not get ahead of ourselves,” the scientist explained.

Astro looked a bit disappointed, after he’d heard what the doctor had to say, but he still had a slight smile. He had always dreamed of working together with Atlas, and now, just maybe…it would become a reality. The robot reluctantly returned to his console and waited for Dr. Elefun to complete his evaluation of Atlas’ programming.

Reno had listened to the whole conversation and watched as the two of them had talked. The boy was smiling to himself. He found Astro’s enthusiasm a bit amusing, but still felt sorry for his best friend. Reno really hoped and prayed that Atlas’ programming would check out and his buddy’s dream would become a reality. He just hoped that Astro wouldn’t forget all about him, when he began working with his brother.

Dr. Elefun had started going over Atlas’ programming and was lost in deep concentration, as he studied each bit of information as it scrolled down the screen in front of him. Reno decided, since their part in the evaluations were completed, he would roll his chair over to where Astro sat, and sit with his friend until the doctor was done. He didn’t think the scientist would mind and it seemed like Astro could use the company.

Reno shut down his console and as he did, noticed his friend sitting there with his head in his hands and his elbows resting on the edge of his console. Reno took hold of his chair and pushed it across the large room. He stopped it next to Astro’s and sat down.

The little robot was still sitting in the same position. Reno heard him sigh as he sat next to him. The boy put his hand on his friend’s shoulder, and said in a consoling tone, “Hey buddy…everything’s gonna be just fine. I can feel it. Dr. Elefun’s gonna find all in order with your brother’s programming and you guys will have the time of your lives working together for the good of everyone.”

Astro sat up and spun his chair around to face Reno. He looked so sad, it almost made Reno want to hug him. Astro spoke in a voice, filled with disappointment, and said, “Reno…when I first came back to the console I was still excited about all the possibilities of working with Atlas. Then…I started thinking…what if there’s something in his programming that doesn’t check out? What if Dr. Elefun finds that Atlas has been hiding something all along? I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up, Reno. I should’ve waited until all the tests were finished. Why was I so foolish?”

Reno thought a moment, and then replied with assurance, “Astro you weren’t foolish. If I had a brother my hopes would’ve been high too. There’s nothing wrong with hoping for the best outcome…especially when you’ve had the dream of working with him for so long. Don’t feel so bad, Stro. It’s not the end of the world. You shouldn’t think about stuff so much. Don’t dwell on things. It makes you start seeing everything in the wrong way. You become pessimistic and begin seeing the bad instead of the good, when nothing has changed. Give it a chance, my friend. I know the doctor is giving Atlas the benefit of a doubt. I know I am, Stro. Come on, buddy…snap out of it.”

Astro had just the hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. His expression had brightened somewhat, and to Reno, he seemed to be regaining some sort of optimism. All at once Astro smiled at his friend and his eyes began to shine in an expression of happiness.

“You know what, Reno…you’re absolutely right. I was doing exactly what you said. I sat here and kept going over things in my mind so many times, I started seeing all of the bad, instead of seeing all of the good that’s happened today. Thank you, Reno. No wonder you’re my best friend in the whole world. You always know how to cheer me up. Of course everything’s going to turn out alright. It has so far, hasn’t it,” Astro said.

“It sure has, my friend. And it’s gonna continue. Too many things have gone right today, for it not to. At least, that’s what I believe, Astro,” Reno answered with confidence.

“You better believe it,” Astro agreed, jovially, and then asked, “Hey…Reno…you wanna play some cards until the doctor gets done?”

“Oh what the heck…why not? Let’s have some fun. I just happen to have a deck right here in my pocket, Astro,” Reno told him.

There was a small fold out table that was leaning against the wall next to the console, where the two boys sat together. It was used for placing a laptop on to upload the information into the console’s computer. Of course at the moment there was no need for it, since no one was using a laptop in this case. Reno hopped up and got the table. He pushed his chair out of the way and unfolded the table, placing it in front of where Astro sat. The boy then drew his own chair up behind him and took a seat across the table from his friend…taking the deck of cards from his pocket as he did so.

Astro had an expression of anticipation as Reno shuffled the cards. He finished shuffling and placed the deck on the tabletop. He had seen Astro watching him while he was doing that and smiled at his friend.

“So, Astro…what game is your pleasure?” Reno asked.

The little robot looked thoughtful for a moment, smiled and then replied, “Hmmm…how about some Gin Rummy? I know, Reno…you always beat me. I’ve never been able to understand why that always happens. I love the game. Maybe it’s because I won’t let myself use my computer to calculate the cards. I believe in playing fair. That would be an unfair advantage. At least, that’s how I feel about it. I guess you’re just better than me.”

“Awww, Astro…I don’t know if I’d say that. It may just be that I’m more experienced. You’re a lot smarter that me, but that doesn’t really matter. I love you, my friend. I know we’ll always be best buds. Now…how about we get on with the game?” Reno commented.

Astro’s cheeks turned slightly crimson, and he said, “Geez Reno…you’re making me feel embarrassed. I suppose I love you too. Of course we’ll always be best friends. I don’t think there’s anyone who’d ever take your place. I agree…let’s get on with the game. Who knows how long it’s gonna take the doctor to finish going through my brother’s programming. Deal away, Reno.”

The boy dealt the cards and the two friends began their first game. What Dr. Elefun said shouldn’t take more than fifteen minutes had already taken them over an hour. As thoroughly as the doctor was going over the programming this just might take all afternoon.

.The two boys were enjoying playing cards immensely and were having a great time talking and joking around. By the time the scientist was getting close to being done with his evaluation of Atlas’ programming, the boys had played five straight games and were starting to get tired.

Atlas had been sleeping through the whole ordeal, so he had no idea how long it had been. He was still asleep, when the doctor finished.

Astro and Reno had taken a break, after their fifth game, and were lying back in their chairs, with their eyes closed, relaxing. Dr. Elefun straightened and sat back in his chair. He then stood and stretched, releasing all of the kinks in his back, after sitting for so long in one position at the master console.

The scientist looked at the clock on the console’s instrument panel and gasped. It was nearly 4pm. He hadn’t realized that Atlas’ total evaluation had taken so much time. Everything within the robot’s programming had checked and double-checked…he was hiding nothing. Atlas had spoken the truth, when he’d said he was a completely changed robot. There was no reason that Dr. Elefun knew of, to keep Atlas from joining Astro in the protection of Planet Earth.

The doctor turned about to check on Atlas. The teenage robot was still asleep on the robotics table. He must’ve put himself in standby, while he waited for all of the tests to be completed. What had Reno and Astro done to keep themselves occupied during the time he’d spent going over the programming…the scientist wondered.

He gazed over at Reno’s station, but the boy wasn’t there. His chair was gone, also. Dr. Elefun turned his vision toward Astro’s station and that’s where he found both of his prodigies. Astro and Reno had both dozed off, as they were relaxing. They both looked absolutely adorable as they slept. The doctor hated to disturb them, but he knew they’d both want to know the outcome…especially Astro.

The doctor strolled over to where the two boys were snoozing, stopped next to Astro’s chair and put his right hand on the little robot’s shoulder. He gently nudged Astro to wake him. The robot’s eyes popped open in surprise and he sat up in the chair, staring up at Dr. Elefun.

“OH!!...Doctor!...I didn’t mean to fall asleep, sir. Reno and I had been playing cards to pass the time…got tired and decided to relax for a little while to wait for you to complete your study of Atlas’ programming,” Astro said in an alarmed tone, explaining himself.

The scientist still had his hand on the little guy’s shoulder, patted him affectionately and said, in a soothing voice, “It’s okay, Astro. You two have been working hard, helping me this afternoon. Don’t get yourself all upset, son. You both deserved the rest.”

Astro smiled up at the doctor, as the scientist removed his hand and stood to his full height. The robot queried, curiously, “What did you find, Dr. Elefun? Was there anything wrong in Atlas’ programming?”

Astro listened expectantly for the answer. The doctor cleared his throat, smiled and said, “I went over his programming with a fine toothed comb. Every single piece of information and sub-routine was perfect. Atlas is hiding nothing. He really is what he has stated…a completely changed robot.”

“You mean…” Astro asked excitedly, and then trailed off.

The doctor immediately continued, “Yes, Astro. I see no reason why you and your brother cannot begin working together, as of tomorrow. You and Atlas will make an excellent team for protecting the planet and taking care of any social problems with people and/or robots here and abroad. What do say, my boy?”

Astro’s face was beaming with happiness. He had a huge smile and his eyes were alight with joy. He couldn’t believe he was finally going to have his dream of working with his brother Atlas, become a reality. The little robot was actually speechless.

Dr. Elefun could tell Astro was at a loss for words, so he assured him, and said, “It’s fine, son. I believe I’d be at a loss for words too, if someone that I’d known as an enemy my whole life, suddenly was a friend I could be with…especially if that friend were a brother. I tell you what, Astro. Take your time and get yourself together. I’m going to awaken Reno and give him the news. I know he’ll be happy to hear this too.”

Astro was still having trouble speaking, so he nodded animatedly that he understood. The doctor had never seen the little robot at a loss for words before, but knew full well, had he been in the same position, he wouldn’t have been able to speak either.

Dr. Elefun left Astro to regain his wits and went over to wake Reno. He leaned down and shook Reno gently to bring the boy around. His eyes opened slowly and then went wide, when he saw the scientist looking down at him.

“Whoa!!!...Doctor Elefun…I must’ve fallen asleep. I’m so sorry, sir,” Reno said, apologetically.

“Reno…no problem at all…I’ve got some good news I’d like to tell you,” the doctor told him, in a kind voice.

The boy had seen his friend across the table looking extremely happy, but very dumbfounded at the same moment. A look of curiosity crossed Reno’s features, as he said to the scientist, “Oh…okay. What’s wrong with Astro? He looks as if he just found out something spectacular, but is so overcome by it he’s having trouble knowing what to say or do.”

“You’ve got that one right, Reno. You know your best friend, pretty well I’d say. If you’ll listen to me for a moment, I’ll explain. Then…you’ll know what’s causing him to behave that way,” the doctor said.

Alright…tell me,” Reno queried.

Dr. Elefun told the boy what his findings were and Reno became overjoyed with the news. He was so happy for his friend; all he wanted to do was hug him and tell him so. Reno jumped from his chair and almost knocked the doctor over when he did. He hurried over to Astro and pulled him to his feet. Astro gazed at his friend and still had a big grin on his face, but still had not said anything. Reno smiled back at him, as they stood facing each other. The boy couldn’t hold it back any longer and embraced the little robot, hugging him tightly. Astro retuned the hug, Reno leaned slightly, spoke into his friend’s ear, and said excitedly, “Astro…I’m soooo happy for you, buddy!! You’ve got an older brother that you can work with now. You must be ecstatic and overjoyed, dude!! This is incredible, Astro. You’re dream has come true!”

Another moment of silence passed, and then all at once, Astro’s face brightened even more, his brown eyes glittering and he began laughing. It was most joyous laughter Reno and the doctor had ever heard come from the little robot. Dr. Elefun was smiling and so was Reno. The boy released his embrace and stepped back, looking at Astro, who had continued to laugh.

Suddenly, Astro stopped, his mouth formed into a big grin, and he exclaimed, “Reno…Doctor…I’ve got a real brother that I can actually be with. I’m so happy, you guys. I feel like flying around and telling everybody. It’s unbelievable. I can’t wait to start working with him.”

Astro went silent, as if suddenly a thought had struck him, he then asked, “Doctor...have either one of you revived Atlas?”

The scientist was the first to answer, and he said, “Why no, Astro…we haven’t. I wanted to give you two the good news, before we did. He’s still sleeping on the table. Would you like to do the honors, Astro, my boy? He is your brother, after all.”

“You bet, Dr. Elefun,” Astro replied excitedly, and ran over to where Atlas was dozing, raising the upper scanner to its stored position as he arrived.

The doctor and Reno both watched as Astro began shaking one of Atlas’ legs to arouse him. It took several seconds before the teenage robot started to stir. His eyes fluttered open and the first thing Atlas saw was Astro gazing at him, with a huge grin on his face.

Atlas laughed merrily, as he sat up and put his legs over the edge of the robotics table. He said in a joyous voice, “Hello brother…I see by your expression that you found I was speaking the truth, when I told you I had changed for the better. It seems that you have found me trustworthy, Astro. Come closer, my brother.”

Astro still found he was a tiny bit on edge, but moved nearer to his brother just the same. Atlas hoped down from the table and stood just in front of Astro. Astro was about a foot shorter than Atlas, so the larger robot had to look down slightly to gaze into his brother’s eyes.

The two stood silently, feeling each other out for a moment, while the doctor and Reno watched from across the large room. Both Astro and Atlas were smiling at one another, as they took in each others aura.

After another moment or two, Atlas’ eyes began shining with affection for his little brother. He placed his hands under Astro’s armpits and picked him up. When this happened, Astro’s eyes widened in great surprise and his mouth formed into an ‘O’, as he was lifted. Atlas drew Astro to him, wrapping his arms around the little robot’s mid-section, as he did so, and hugged him tightly.

Astro began to relax, wrapped his legs around Atlas’ waist to support himself, and returned the embrace, lying his head on his brother’s shoulder as he did so. He could feel the emotion of love surrounding him, as his brother held him. Astro raised his head and looked lovingly into Atlas’ eyes. He could see the same thing there. They truly were brothers.

All at once, Atlas began laughing joyously. Astro found it contagious and began laughing too. Atlas became so filled with merriment he began spinning around, holding his brother tightly in his arms, as the two continued to laugh.

They spun around and around for a bit, so filled with joy over just being together as friends and brothers, no longer enemies. After a time Atlas stopped, but the two brothers continued to gaze into one another’s eyes. They had stifled their laughter, but were still smiling, because of the love they were now feeling in their hearts for each other.

Reno and Dr. Elefun continued to watch the two. Both the boy and the scientist had grins on their faces. They were both absolutely content and joyous with the outcome. The doctor was thinking about all of the wonderful things and missions the two brothers would be able to carry out together. What a team they would make, defending the Earth and its inhabitants…Humans and Robots alike. Dr. Elefun was like a proud father, whose second son had just come home, after being gone for so long, and was watching his sons as they reunited.

Reno was extremely proud of his best friend too, and liked the changed Atlas very much. He had doubts, though. He wondered if Astro, his best friend in the whole world, would have time for him now that he had joined with his brother. Astro had assured him earlier that Atlas being there wouldn’t change their relationship, but Reno still had misgivings.

Atlas was the first to speak, his smile broadening, as he did so, and said in an affectionate voice, “Astro, my little brother, we have made a very special and unique bond here today. Not only have we become close friends and joined as brothers, but we have each found the love we feel for each other; a pure unconditional love that only true brothers can share. Before I had been changed, I had never thought this would be possible, but here we are, my brother. Here we are.”

As Atlas spoke to Astro his voice became more emotional with every word. By the time he’d finished speaking, he was actually shedding tears of joy. Astro completely agreed with what his brother had just said and was too becoming very emotional, his eyes also welling with tears.

Astro had the most precious smile on his face and his expression was the most adorable one of jubilation anyone had ever seen. Astro was happier than he’d been his entire life. He knew he must reply to his brother, and hoped he wouldn’t choke on his emotions, as he spoke. He mustered the strength inside himself, praying that the words would come out clearly.

“Atlas,” Astro said and his voice held, so he continued, “I love you, brother. By your change in attitude, you have made my greatest dream come true. The dream I’ve had, ever since I found out you were my brother, of working side by side for the good of Planet Earth and the people here. I feel so much pride and joy for you, Atlas. I now know for certain I can trust you and that you will back me up in anything we do together.”

Astro’s tears had begun streaming down his face, tears of absolute joy. Atlas smiled and the two embraced once again, holding each other tightly. Dr. Elefun had his handkerchief out and was wiping the tears from his own eyes. Reno was trying to hold back, but had started blubbering too. It was such a beautiful reunion.

Reno had turned away, hoping no one had seen him become so emotional with happiness over his friend. The only one he’d ever cried in front of was Astro. His friend was the only one he felt comfortable with, showing those kind of feelings. He got himself together, wiped the tears away with the sleeve of his shirt and turned back around with a smile on his face.

Dr. Elefun had also gotten himself together and still watched Atlas and Astro. The two brothers now stood side by side near the robotics table. Both were looking in the direction of where the doctor and Reno stood, near the console that Astro had manned earlier.

The two brothers strode over to stand in front of Dr. Elefun and Reno. Everyone was smiling happily. Astro reached out with his right hand and took Reno’s in his own, shaking it warmly. Atlas had done the same with the doctor.

Astro spoke first, and said jovially, “Reno, my good friend…I want to thank you for what you and Dr. Elefun have done for me here today. I love you, buddy. I’ll never forget what the two of you accomplished for me. You’ve had a great part in bringing Atlas and I together. Reno…you’ll always be my best friend. If there’s ever anything…and I mean anything…I can do for you in any way, I’ll be here for you in an instant. Atlas will too…won’t you Atlas?”

Atlas had been thanking the doctor in the same manner as Astro had Reno. Of course it wasn’t quite so involved, since the doctor was a friend, but not a best friend as such. Atlas was still extremely thankful to him, though.

Atlas was done speaking to the scientist and had heard Astro’s question. He’d also heard the last of what his brother had told his best friend. He answered in kind, and said, “You better believe it, brother. Reno…if you ever need either of us…all you have to do is call. We’ll be here in an instant.”

Reno laughed, letting go of Astro hand, and said, “At least I know I’ve got you guys I can count on. It’s nice to know. Thanks. Also, the pleasure was all mine…I was glad to help out with this.”

Astro had moved over in front of Dr. Elefun, gave him a quick hug, and said, “Thank you, doctor. You’ve given me my dream.”

“Why you’re most welcome, Astro…you know I’m always happy to assist you in any way I can,” the doctor replied.

Atlas was done thanking Reno and stood next to his brother. The doctor looked thoughtful for a moment, and said, “I tell you what…since it’s getting so late in the day, there isn’t really any point in making any plans tonight. Reno…why don’t you go to your quarters and get some rest? I’ll come get you when we’re ready to leave. Astro…I’ve been thinking…since Atlas is part of your family now, why don’t you take him home to meet your parents and your sister. I believe he’d enjoy that. You know, Atlas, they’re your family now too.”

Astro grinned and said happily, “I think that’s an excellent idea, doctor. What do you say, brother…would you like to meet your new family?”

Atlas made a show being in deep thought, then his face broke into a smile, and he replied jovially, “Are you kidding, Astro…of course I’d love to meet my new family. Are our parents’ nice people? And…what’s my sister like?”

“Mom and Dad are really nice…you’ll love them, Atlas. And, Sis…well…she’s not so bad either. She takes a little getting used to, but she’s great. A bit of a tomboy and always finding ways to get into trouble, but I love her dearly. I’m sure you’ll like her too,” Astro answered.

“That settles it. Let’s go, brother. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve never had a family before. It makes me feel good. You know, if Livian were still alive she’d be so proud of me, Astro. This is how she always wanted me to be. She forever tried to change me for the better, but of course I wouldn’t listen. Maybe if I had, she’d still be here. I suppose I can’t think about that now…it hurts too much. This is a joyous occasion. Astro, let’s go home,” Atlas said.

Reno had been waiting for the two to finish their conversation before leaving, he gave each of them a wave, and said, “Well fellows, it’s been real. Astro, my good friend, I’ll see you here tomorrow. Atlas…you too. Doctor…I’ll be seeing you a little later.”

With that Reno turned on his heel, went over, retrieved the playing cards and put the folding table back against the wall. He turned about and strode out the door, waving again as he headed for his quarters to relax until Dr. Elefun came to get him.

Astro and Atlas watched Reno and as he left, said in unison, “Take care, Reno. See yah in the morning.”

Astro giggled. He hadn’t expected that to happen. He guessed that he and his brother must be starting to connect. It felt good.

“Well you two…I’m going to say goodnight. I’ve got to go to my office. I have some work I need to finish, before Reno and I go home. Enjoy your evening, boys. I’ll see you here bright and early,” Dr. Elefun told the brothers.

“Okay, doctor. Have a good evening, sir,” Astro said.

“Yes, Dr. Elefun…please do. I promise Astro and I will be here right on time. Goodnight, sir,” Atlas intoned.

The scientist turned, gave them a quick wave and strode off down the hallway toward the elevator. Astro and Atlas gazed at each other for a moment, just enjoying being together.

Atlas was the first to speak, and said, So, brother…are we gonna stand here all afternoon…or are we gonna go meet my new parents and sister?”

Astro laughed, and replied, “Okay, okay…we can go, Atlas. C’mon…last one to the elevator’s a rotten egg.”

Astro took off running down the hall, laughing as he went.

“Why you little…I’ll get you,” said Atlas, laughing as he ran after his brother.

The two reached the elevator at exactly the same moment. Atlas gave Astro an affectionate shove as they got there. Astro pushed back and the two fell together in front of the elevator doors laughing, just as they opened. Luckily no one was in the car or they’d have been in trouble for horsing around inside the Ministry.

The two got up from the floor, still giggling slightly, and stepped into the elevator together. Atlas pressed the button for the ground floor, the doors slid closed and the car began its descent.

Astro had remembered that Dr. Elefun had not told Atlas that he had the power of flight, just as elevator started to move. The doctor must have forgotten during everything that had gone on after the evaluations. He thought he’d better tell his brother about that. Maybe Atlas would want to try his new found capability. That would be great. They could fly home together, instead of walking.

“Atlas?” Astro asked.

The other robot seemed as if he was thinking about something, but still answered, “What is it, brother?”

Astro lips spread into a grin, and he said, “I’ve got some great news for you. Dr. Elefun meant to tell you this, before he left and I guess he must’ve forgotten. Did you know you have jets in your legs just like I do?”

“WHAT???” Atlas answered in a surprised, but delighted voice.

“That’s right, Atlas. You can fly. You wanna give it a try, when we get outside?” Astro inquired, excitedly.

“You better believe I do, brother! You might have to give me some assistance at first, since this will be my first time. WOW!!! We’ll really make a good team now,” Atlas said, his voice filled with enthusiasm.

Astro laughed and said, “You better believe it, bro…you’d better believe it!! Of course I’ll give you assistance, Atlas. What’s a brother for?”

“I suppose you’re right, Astro. What in the heck is taking this elevator so long?” Atlas asked impatiently, due to his excitement.

Just as Atlas voiced his question, the car came to a stop and the elevator doors parted…revealing the ground floor of the Ministry of Science. The two brothers hurriedly headed outside. Atlas was overjoyed and was extremely anxious to try flying. They reached the walkway outside of the building and Astro motioned for them to stop.

Atlas listened intently as his brother explained the intricacies of flight. He told him in detail about how he was able to hover, how to make turns, etc. When Astro was done, he told his brother to watch closely. The little robot ignited his jets and rose into the air just above Atlas’ head. Atlas watched him with pure concentration.

Astro landed gently in front of his brother, and said, “You see how easy that was? You wanna give it a try?”

“I guess so. Okay…here goes,” Atlas said.

The teenage robot ignited his own jets, but he gave them a little too much thrust at first. Before he knew it, he had climbed to almost one hundred feet and then finally got them under control. Astro followed him, and hovered just across from his brother.

“Gave it a little too much boost there, didn’t yah, Atlas?” Astro said, halfway joking.

“Whoa!! I wasn’t expecting it to be so fast. That startled me, brother. Is it always this thrilling?” Atlas queried, smiling.

“It’s wonderful each and every time I take to the air. Of course, most of the time I’m on a mission, so I can’t think about the flying…I’m too concerned with and concentrating on what I need to do,” Astro told his brother.

“I can understand that. You know, Astro…I think I’m gonna love flying as much as you do,” Atlas said with satisfaction.

“So…are you ready to try some real flying…instead of just floating here, hovering,” Astro asked.

“I sure am, brother. Let’s do it!!!” Atlas replied, excitedly.

“Follow my lead. I’ll steady you, if needed. Alright…let’s give it a shot,” Astro instructed.

Astro boosted his thrust and began straight and level flight. He watched for his brother to follow his lead. Atlas tried to do the same, but was a bit unsteady at first. Astro reached over with his right hand and steadied Atlas as he flew next to him. Finally Atlas began to get the hang of it. He motioned for Astro to let go and took off, doing a couple of barrel rolls, then swooping around to slide up next to his brother in level flight.

Atlas let out a, “Whoooooo Hoooooooo!!!!! I’ve got it, brother…I’ve got it!!!!”

“I believe you do, Atlas. Gee wiz, you think you could get a little more excited,” Astro told his brother, laughingly.

Atlas cheeks turned crimson, as he grinned sheepishly at Astro. He’d done quite an excellent job of embarrassing himself.

“Awww, Atlas. You’ve got no reason to be embarrassed. You should’ve heard me whooping and hollering, when I first got the hang of flying. That was nothing,” Astro assured his brother, as they flew along together.

Atlas followed Astro back to the front of the Ministry of Science, where they both landed for a moment. Astro’s landing was perfect, but Atlas’ was somewhat hard. The teenage robot almost fell from the impact, but was able to catch himself, with Astro’s help.

“Landing’s the hardest part. You have to control the thrust exactly to insure a soft landing. Too much and you won’t land…too little and, well, you see what happened. You’ll get it, Atlas. I know you will. It took me a few times too. So…are you ready to go meet Mom, Dad, and Uran?” Astro inquired.

“I sure am,” Atlas answered with enthusiasm, and then said, “Are we going to walk…or are we going to fly?”

“We’re gonna fly, brother,” Astro said, and then, “It’s the only way to travel. Shall we go?”

“I’m ready. I always say the more experience you get at something, the better you are. Let’s go, Astro,” Atlas said, anxiously.

The two took to the air, heading for home. They flew together arm in arm…full of pride and satisfaction. Astro and Atlas…two brothers, who for the first time, would be working together as a team; a team for justice. As they disappeared over the horizon, they were both looking forward to a relaxing evening at home. Atlas, who now had parents, a brother, and a sister for the first time in his life…and Astro…who’s dream had finally come true. His brother was with him…they were together…together forever.
