Astro Boy 2003 Re-Release

Taken from here

Don't get excited; despite Crackle & TV.Com's recent release of the original widescreen version (only viewable by Americans), these DVDs will be fullscreen and only with the English/Spanish/Portuguese language options. Plus, the episode order and front DVD cover are exactly the same as the ones in the 2005 box set. These could basically be repackaged, but they'd have to eradicate all the "DISC 1/2/3/4/5" from the DVD menus.

But if you look at the back of the new DVDs, the screenshot samples are richer in colour. Does anyone else suspect the episodes would have their colour level? Especially on volume three...but Sony wouldn't be so kind as to do that. :d oh:

Anyone interested in these? I'm getting most of my favorite episodes on VHS, but I'm considering picking up volume five. Then again, maybe I should leave these be and let it sink into Sony's metaphorical head that they're doing something wrong.

Any thoughts?

Not excited at all -_-. I hesitate to buy non-uncut/unedited anime without the Japanese option!

Not that I don't like the 2003 dub, but it's just not worth it to me!

*patiently waits for original Japanese subbed version to get released*

No way, @__@

I know I should support series I like when they are released in english, but when they edit a series in the way they did Astro Boy and won't provide a dubless-unedited option, I just don't want to give money to a company for something I can't stand to, and probably won't watch.

So I'll pass this time. Maybe I'll follow Fauna's example and get some episodes on VHS someday, but I sure as heck ain't gonna support a company who won't respect the fans... Call me spoiled, I just can't stand to watch it.

As long as this creates a wider interest in Atom, I cannot complain. Gatchaman went through 2 English adaptations befote the audio hybrid DVDs were imported. However, as the English version really stank, I fear that it may cause people to lose interest, instead of making them wonder about the earlier series.

Like Ninjatron said, Sony's only capitalizing on any consumer interest in the movie, not catering to longtime fans. I'd expect the movie to stir up wider interest.

You guys know who would have been better handlers of the 2003 series, if I had to pick any studio but Funimation? Viz. And I say this because of how they handled Zatch Bell.

This is Zatch. Just like with Astro, most of the promotional art featured him angry, or in an action pose, or eating a large fish. But in the actual anime, Zatch's childishness and innocence were highlighted in the dub...much like the opposite of what happened to Astro.
Plus, Viz tends to keep the original names in its properties, and release the Japanese dub when enough public interest is detected.

I hate lingering on this, but can you imagine how big a deal the 2003 series was in Asia when it came out? Sony cut down the series into one format that was redubbed and re-used all over the world...you could say they ruined Astro Boy for 10+ countries and kept most of them from ever seeing the original version.

I would love to see Funimation or Viz get their hands on Astro Boy as well. Even if their dubbing sucked (which I would doubt) at least they have the decency to give us the Japanese versions.
I refuse to buy Sony's Astro Boy DVDs either. I make a statement. Until they give me what I want, I'm not giving them what they want

It would be good if Funimation, Viz or even ADV picked it up. I never complain a lot about dubs, but it's getting the original or near-original content that matters most to me.

Ever since Funimation picked up One Piece from 4Kids, all we can do is hope something like that happens. (Can you guys imagine what 4kids would do to Astro?!)

Until then, I'll try to get the tapes online somehow. Turns out the guy shipped my tapes not too long ago, so they should be here anytime now...
