Madman Entertainment are re-releasing the 1980s series in two boxsets on October 7th 2009. No doubt to cash in on the movie. They're listed as AU$40 each, although a local department store catalogue has them for $33.

No word on extra features. 26/25 episodes per box. They're also still trying to sell the limited edition deluxe collection from 5 years ago (currently $100).

For those wondering: odds are high these new releases dont have extras (that said I REALLY like that boxart for the rerelease, better than the minimalistic red cover of the original set!)
As an aside - Right Stuf is re-releasing the first set of the 60's series in this format also and they seem to be just the episodes

There's also a release containing the first 6 episodes of the 60's anime coming:

Might go for that mini-set: I've always wanted to see the 60's series but those Ultra edition sets cost way too much for me. Can anyone tell me if the 60's sets extras are worth it at all?

The best thing about the Madman set from 5 years ago is the bonus disc. If you can find those special features online burn em to a disc yourself and buy the USA release. It's a hell of a lot cheaper. As for the sixties set that is a good deal. I have no idea why Madman is bothering to re-release the 80's series if they are still trying to pawn off that beautiful red tin?

While madman does have the original first 2 episodes subbed and a few additional deleted scenes I consider the american set the better of the 2
It's more affordable than the deluxe tin for one and that Japanese Audio is a big win in my opinion as sometimes the 80's dub suffers from some VA's reading off the script. For Aussies this is a nice chance for people who cant afford the deluxe to get the series again, its worth it.

The 1960s mini collection is a great idea. I bought the full collection and I don't think I got through more than 30 or so episodes.
The main extras were episode 32 in colour with dual audio, episode 34 with a Japanese commentary track, episode 193 (the finale) with subtitles, half an hour of deleted scenes, and a 7 minute documentary showing how the anime was made.
If you just want to see a few 1960s episode to see what it was like, probably not worth it.

Oddly, the set of the 1st 6 episodes has an image from the 2nd season on the cover.

Well volumes 1 and 2 of the manga were re-issued as an omnibus edition. I haven't heard of any plans for future volumes though.
I'm ordering the anime again since I'm a devoted collector.
