Dr. Tenma

Having never read the manga (and also having only been a fan of astro boy for 2 months), I want to ask something I'm unsure of.
I read somewhere that the version of Tenma in the 2003 series is based on a phase of his in the manga. Is that true? Was he at one point as creepy as that?

Actually, at one point of the series he is. There was a point where Tezuka's publisher wanted him to make Astro more aggressive. Tezuka HATED the idea but they're signing his paychecks so he had to go with it. In it, they have Tenma repair Astro but make change his attitude to make him more aggressive and anti-human. This is where Tenma's creepy phase comes in. I don't remember how Astro gets fixed but he does because they mention that the Manga's sales PLUMMETED when this happened.
