I dunno, but I love it! It's so irreverantly fun, and just the kind of quirk in a character design that makes the character so much more memorable and interesting! When I first was learning about the character (because of the movie coming out), I kind of thought maybe it was just a gag for the movie to draw attention, but I was really actually quite ecstatic when I found out this was part of the character way back to his origin. It's just really neat to me that a 60's (well, 50's going back to the manga) character had butt guns. ^.^ (Technically, I think the manga/original anime describe them as "hip guns", but they always seem to be shown coming from his butt!).

I can think of a practical use -- try to remember that Astro regularly gets his limbs ripped off, so he needs to store an extra piece somewhere

The evil villain would think "I'm gonna attack Astro from behind..." and then, his sidekick would warn him "be aware of the machine guns hidden in Astro's butt!" The bad guy ponders it... "Oh wow... I need to be extra careful, then.... I may need to reconsider sneaking up on Astro from behind..."

What's so cool about them is that they're 9mm caseless rounds! The germans were the first to develop them in the 1980's and Tezuka already had the concept in 1954!

They rear machine guns are actually placed at his hips, but the drawing shows them coming from really the only spot on his body from which they can fire, his butt. Interesting that the 03 series ignored them.
