One part of Astro that has me completely stumped is the green band. You can see what I am talking about in the following image.

So what is that green band and what is it for? It must have a reason for being there hmm? So what are your thoughts about this?

Well don't cha think he'd look kinda funny WITHOUT a belt? Then it would REALLY look like Speedos or underwear!! I guess ol' Doc Tenma forgot to program the painting device to include something like belt loops or a BUCKLE!

:tenma: <--- Not A Fashion Expert! I mean c'mon ... what boy would wear RED BOOTS!?! (I always thought they were blue - I was shocked when I first saw a color image of Astro!)

I think the idea differs over time. In the 1980 episode where Uran put on a pair of Astro's speedos and i'm sure they had the the green strap attached to them.

And in the 2003 anime the green strap and speedo look wielded onto Astro, though Astro's comment to Uran of 'and you won't give me anymore wedgys' could stand corrected, though, it could've just been there for the dub.

As for the 2009 film the speedos are literally plastered onto Astro's body, and the green strap resembles more of a belt.

Since I always thought of it as a belt, I'm guessing that's what the green strap is. o.o

I believe it was Fred Schodt who said that Atom had been modeled on Superman or Mighty Mouse, yes, it is on page 47.

Yes, I read that in Schodt's book over the weekend -- checked MM & SM costume style: nope -both have buckles &/or belt loops (plus the ubiquitous leotard!). I think Tezuka wanted AB's costume to be a permanent fixture, but didn't want to paint his whole body in a color (would make him less natural looking?). So he compromised. And besides -- it IS a "guy" thing, running around shirtless! :p

BTW You can see how Tezuka "supermanned" Atom in his adult body

You know, I'm so tempted just to stick Astro's head on Superman and Mighty Mouse now XD
