I LOVE the 80's Canadian Astro!!!!

Postby AprilSeven » 15 years ago

I did a search on YouTube and found some episodes dubbed in Canada. OMG - WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

Astro SOUNDS as adorable as he looks -- then I saw why: he was voiced by a little boy. The whole "vibe" is different -- not as "droopy" or "whiny" as the US version. Professor Peabody (Dr. Elefun), "Sarah" (Uran) - his robot parents -- all much, much better suited to the character's personalities. I watched "Robots nobody wanted" and "Girl from Andor"

Quiverwing, the person who uploaded the episodes, shared this info: Astro was played by a 12 year old Steven Bednarski, but he and all the other actors are uncredited and therefore unknown.

Thanks to Fauna for making me aware of this version -- I'm going to watch as many as possible (wish I could buy the whole Canadian version on DVD -- anyone know if such a thing is available?)

:astro: - Ohhh Canada!! You made my voice tres bien!

The Robot Circus should also be available on Youtube, too. :lol: I'm actually Quiverwing, to be honest. I got two of the episodes from a tape Astroboy had, and another from a guy named Sygo7g. So far, I'm still searching for the remaining 48, but I can only find those in the Quebecois dub.

Someone suggested asking a few different Canadian TV stations if they still have their copies, and I'm going to have to do that before it's too late. I really hope people who have the Canadian dub on tape know they have something incredibly rare and don't just tape over it. :d oh: My parents used to work at a Saskatchewan TV station that aired Astro Boy, and they had every single episode with the Canadian dub, but they were on Beta Tape and were thrown out.

Names! There were a variety of name changes, some wacky and some fitting.
Dr. Tenma = Professor Balfus (dead)
Tobio = Tommy Balfus
Hamegg = Roberto
Ochanomizu = Dr. Cole Green, later Professor Peabody
Tokyo = Futuropolis
Skunk Kusai = Slippery
Shunsaku Ban = Max McNugget
Uran = Sarah
Livian = Selena
Pluto = Commonturk
Astro's Dad = Arthur
Jump = Blip

They do sound a bit better, at least Astro sounds more like a boy. But did they really have to change everybodies names in the Canadian version? It's really weird

I've seen a few episodes of the Canadian Astro Boy and I got to agree with you. Having a boy voice Astro worked although I guess the problem with boy actors is like kids they grow up, maybe they just thought it'd be easier to have a woman voice him before, it's been like that a couple times.

The only thing I dislike on the Canadian version is they censor more, but it's more funny than annoying like the 2003 version was. Like Tenma is mentioned to have sent Astro to the circus rather than being kidnapped, and as for being written out he apparently died in a car accident and Astro was never told.

Another episode on that human plant girl cut her dying, instead Elefun mentioned she went back to her home world after some people picked her up, and the flower Astro finds isn't her but a gift from her, even going as far as to say he'll go see her someday.

The last one I watch was Mars episode where Astro was the captain and that guy hated him. In the alien battle instead of the guy fighting to the death to save Astro and the others, Astro instead tells him "i can beat him, but go back and get me a battery pack" which he does, and for some dumb reason is implyed to have been aducted by aliens.

The censors like I said don't anger me, it's just funny XD I'd love to have known what they did to the last episode with Nuka and the bomb, maybe they pretended she didn't die and she sent Astro her feet over Japan Airmail.

I can't tell for the Canadian version, but I can for the French one (from France, not Quebec).

The scientist just managed to repair Nikky (called Natacha) after removing the bomb, and the whereabouts of Astro's feet are left to the viewer's imagination :D
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

Where did you find that episode in the Canadian dub?! :o hmy: I need to see it!

If anyone ever sees the French version, they should know it was edited in Quebec, so it has the same edits as the English-Canadian version. Other edits I can remember:

1) Pluto/Commonturk doesn't kill his opponents; he only knocks them out or shuts them down temporarily.
2) Light Ray doesn't explode; the bomb he's holding turns out to be defective, and everyone around calls it a Christmas miracle. Via Le Monde must have been overjoyed when they realized they could get away with putting Light Ray's voice over blank backgrounds.
3) Zeus, instead of bursting into his victims' rooms at the beginning of Uran's First Love and killing them, only runs in with the later spoken mention that they were attacked.

I haven't gotten to see Save The Carolina-3, but Astro Forever has told me they did a lot of editing with it. Like, imagine how many scenes of Gene's dad with his eyes shot out that they'd have to deal with...

Where can I find the French episodes again? I know StrangeWings put them on Youtube once, but they got taken down. And whenever I go to Anapan's FTP server, it's crashed or full of junk.

WOW!! This is all so great and fascinating!! Fauna YOU ROCK!!

You can be the "Todd Ferson" of the Canadian Astro Boy series -- you know, start your own business and call it "The Right Up North Stuf!" It's interesting that they (TRS) haven't put this together, but maybe it's the amount of work, and they don't have enough Canadian connections to take a stab at it. Maybe they'd be willing to even help you make it happen?!

I THOUGHT the "Girl from Andor" was "different" from the one I had seen before -- and sure enough - it's the censors. It's amazing how much they pull from these programs.

In the end, I'm guessing the best way to watch all three series is Japanese with subtitles. I got a kick out of all the different names -- they didn't make them comical as Fred Ladd did (actually I prefer the "real sounding" names).

Here's a question: does anyone know if the MOVIE released in Japan was different in content from the one we saw here?
