Is the Astro Boy novel any good?

Postby Alittleacorn » 15 years ago

Ya know, this one.

I frowned upon it cause I thought it was for kids, but then someone spills to me Astro was in pieces at the end, and a preview of the first few pages seemed to have stuff that wasn't in the movie.

So what's the deal? What are the differences in this novel to the movie and comic, and is it worth getting for that? And most importantly...

WHERE CAN I BUY IT IN ENGLAND? IT DIDN'T COME OUT HEREEEEEEE!

 Yes, but I feel American at heart  I don't like tea and I don't like my British accent. :d oh:

And yeah there was a novel lol. Apparently it has the Scorpion Brother's fight too. ______________  I wonder how the emotional scenes are handled. I know for a fact Tenma calls Astro a failed experiment, says so in the comic and video game.

Barnes and Noble has it!!!

Postby AprilSeven » 15 years ago

Looky!! Don't fret . . . sounds like it's a small book. I have the "graphic novel" but I was looking for the novel adaptation of the movie, too. The review doesn't sound terrific though

Synopsis

Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy follows the story of a young robot who was created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he has lost. This novel is based on the new animated film, includes 8 pages of full-color images from the movie, and is written by New York Times bestselling author Tracey West.
Children's Literature

Astro Boy is made in the image of Dr. Tenma's dead son Toby, but when the robot is activated by his creator/father the doctor realizes his mistake. A robot cannot replace a son in his father's heart. Unfortunately, robotic Toby does not understand he is a robot and is heartbroken by his father's rejection. His father's closest friend and ally, Dr. Elefun, tries to help the robot, but Toby ends up being shoved over the edge of Metro City and tumbles down the earth's surface—a huge wasteland of broken robots and the people who survive the trash heap. After helping the human children of the junk yard get rid of the evil man, Toby admits to being a robot. He and the children go back up to Metro City and save it from destruction at the hands of the evil, egocentric President Stone, who wants to put bad energy into the Peacekeeper weapon. Toby realizes his destiny is to save the world from disasters and takes the name Astro Boy. Since Toby does not change his name until well into the book, I found it confusing to have him called Astro Boy at the beginning of the book. I did not think the book was well written, but if it is going to get children to read then I guess it has a place.

I agree with you, Acorn, and I want to get it too. First it's written by a best-selling author, second it's Astro -- so it has to have plenty of redeeming attributes *thinks for a moment about NOW comics series* . . .

I still want it!!

A sweet dude named Lugiaisawesome told me this.

lol, its not that different from the movie, but when astro was following the kids back to their place, there was a part where they're attacked by some monster, & astro saves em. & when astro is flying 4 the first time, how he drills his way through the mountain without hesitation, in the book, he was going so fast he couldn't stop so he kinda crashed into it, but he then realized that he didn't blow up :X D: lol, & then he knew how strong he really was, so he drilled his way through, umm, oh, & when toby says, "thanks for the tip, & thank u for this" in the book it was like,

robot: gee, kid, you're like 13 years old, its time u grew a backbone.

*slams door*

Toby: & you're like, 22. its time u grew a brain.

I think the book's version of the story is funnier.

Astro goes crashing into the mountain gracelessly...I love it! XD

Thank's for sharing that -- it almost sounds like the "monster" is what became the junkyard pirates.

The mountain crash makes sense, I thought it was a little inconsistently that he just flew into the mountain, digging away. How would he have known he could do that?

There are all these little pieces we have to find and put back together again! But we're doin' it!

I always thought he figured it out from flying into stuff before that, but the scene does seem over the top with the 'dramatic crash into mountain and blow a water fountain out of it. Altough it's really meant to stand for a bit in the second Japanese opening scene from the 1983 show.

Still, i might jump off cliff and see I can fly-THUMP x_x....

You're so RIGHT!! I never saw that beginning (and thanks Fauna a.k.a. Quiverwing for posting it on YouTube). That's ABSOLUTELY why they included it. I wonder if there's someplace to read part of the book online . . . . hmmm * types Command-N clicks Google...*
