English Astro Boy Editions

Postby Xenops » 14 years ago

So I looked at the Dark Horse editions of AB at Borders, and I was disappointed with the size. The pictures are very small . Perhaps I have been spoiled with the Vertical releases of Black Jack where everything is nice and big. But I was wondering if there are different English editions of AB available?

But since some of the volumes are cheap in used format on Amazon, perhaps I shouldn't complain.

Dark Horse editions are the only English editions of the original series. There is the Australian editions of the 2003 series, but that's probably not what you meant.

I guess there is always The Astro Boy Magazine for iPhone/iPad. You can get the first issue for free but have to pay to get the other issues. At least with the digital magazine, you can zoom in and the like.

Otherwise, nope, nothing else, at all.

Oh shipping would be quite a bit if you're shipping from Australia. Heck, us Canadians have to pay double the shipping when ordering something from the US despite it being just across the border. Now imagine shipping from another CONTINENT.

...However, I'm pretty sure the 2003 manga are now all out of print. I guess some Australian stores still have copies, maybe Ebay too.

Australian manga are in English, and generally the same I guess.

Although everyone knows by this point that the 2003 Australian editions were poorly manufactured, I'm not fond of it.

Anyway, nevermind this.

Amazon does offer "Library Bindings" for double the price, but Dark Horse never mentioned these... It's probably just Amazon taking the books and putting the pages in a binder or something, so the size of the art would be the same.

Now about the 2003 manga, it is still in print and the distributor, Madman, is selling it on its website.

I've seen the 2003 manga on eBay pretty frequently, although get ready to pay up to $20 a book.

Side factoid: Brian Thomas once told me that he'd tried to get NOW! Comics to translate Tezuka's manga, and I assume it would have been in comic book format, much like what happened with Mai The Psychic Girl and Ranma 1/2 wayyy back in the day. This obviously never went anywhere, but with this being 1988 or so, things could have been much different today...

Sure, an older fanbase, but NOW! Comics tanked in 1990 and the manga license would be forever in limbo. So...ignore my pondering and give Dark Horse a hug, ladies and gentlemen.
