What will happen to the Astro Boy series and Anime?
Sorry if this thread is a bit mixed but I will try my not to go off-topic and I would really appreciate it if other people did as well. I'm sure most people are aware of the new law that Japan passed. I'm going to wait until it goes to effect and then I will panic if something happens. I personally have no problem with them cutting out sexually explicit material; (unless it affects Astro Boy) I do care if it affects the violence. I will try not go off about that, at least not in this thread. Now this might affect Astro Boy because his appearance has always been the same, two spikes in the hair with a speed/briefs/underwear whatever you want to call it, and knee high red boots. Personally, when I first discovered him his outfit kinda bothered me a bit but then I got used to it. (What also kind of bugged me was the fact that almost all of the time no one made fun of him for it or pointed it out that he was half-naked.) I'm not sure if it's a Japanese thing or if it's just because Tezuka first drew him over 60 years ago. But I never really understood why Tezuka came up with that outfit. I do know that Japan isn't as crazy about censorship like we are in America (At least I don't think) For example curse words fly by all the time on Japanese television, curse words by themselves don't bother Japanese people. I think that might have something to do with it. However, now this law raises more questions. What's going to happen to the Astro Boy series? Will this effect future anime series, the upcoming Pluto film, current series, or anything Astro or Tezuka? I do hope that they won't have to make any unnecessary changes to Astro. I'm personally not a big fan of his dress code, but when you change someone elses creation to a certain degree it's almost like an insult to the original creator. I'd like to hear other people's responses and if I said anything that wasn't correct I apologize. This statement was a bit mixed but I felt the need to get this out there. Again, I'm not going to panic now but I'm not to sure what's going to happen to Anime after this law is in affect. Does anyone else have anything to share about this?

I was really worried when I saw that, because it might ruin the future of Astro Boy. Astro's signature outfit is the red boots and the speedos and I'm completely fine with that, but if they change his outfit, he'll be like Astro in the '09 movie wearing clothes all the time. If violence is affected, it might affect the Pluto movie and if it does, that might be the thing that ruins the movie. I'll be pretty mad if it does affect Astro Boy and I wish we could do something about that law.

Dude, we'll have to wait and see. There isn't that much about Astro Boy that isn't inappropriate for kids I don't think. I guess his outfit maybe but not so much, other than that I don't really see a problem with it. A little bit of violence, no swearing, no gore, and nothing graphic. So hopefully it won't be affected

Oh yea, I completely forgot about that from the 80's series. Why did they make her skirt so short?[/QUOTE]
Cause every comic young girls at the time were like that, and not just in Japan. It was a fashion design. Panties are associated with arousing only if the viewer sees it that way. The same for Astro, some people may think his outfit looks sexy, but again that's also the viewer's fault and not the artist's.
I wouldn't worry about the violence in AB either, as it is always there to show that it's a bad thing, while Tokyo wants to censor art that promotes violence, which is the exact opposite.
I'm on Twitter.
Okay the, thanks for the clarification. I doubt Astro will suffer because of this law. (at least I hope so) I've never ever heard anyone say that Astro looked "sexy" but then again I've come across a few people on the internet that think Sonic the Hedgehog is sexy.
But does anyone know why Tezuka drew Astro the way he did? In other words, why did he make Astro Half-naked? Does anyone know?

I highly doubt that Tezuka even wanted Astro and Uran to be 'sexy', and they're drawn to a typical girl and boy, except that they are robots. Also, they're pretty simple when it comes to body parts (and all those you-know-what stuff :eek
so yeah.
And in the 03 series Uran was given a slight redesign and those 'panty shots', maybe it has something to do with the audience...
