JAPANESE NAMES FOR B&W CHARACTERS

Postby jeffbert » 14 years ago

I appeal to to those who have access to the Japanese language; I know that ASTROBUDDY has "TetsuWan Atom(u) 193 Episode Guide," & perhaps I should do this in a PM, but as others might like to participate, I ask publicly.

For my 1st request, I ask about the bald guy with the eye patch over his left eye, & a cross-shaped scar above it. The manga version of Gadem calls him Mephisto. He appears in about 5 episodes, including the color version of the manga NUMBER SEVEN, known as THE MOON MONSTERS in English.

Going from earliest to latest, he is in these:

18 Gadem................................(15, Gangor the Monster)
55 Rejuvenating Gas...............(-- --)
56 Earth Defense Army...........(32, The Moon Monsters)
105 General Atom...................(96 General Astro)
129 Atom vs. Atom..................(-- --)

Okay. According to the "Tezuka Manga Encyclopedia# 1: TetsuWan Atom(u) the fella we know best as Patch and Number One is known as "Mephisto". Although the TetsuWan Atom(u) 193 Episode Guide gives him the name Nu-Bo-, the merchant. At least in the Guest Chara section of the synopsis of Ep.# 18.

I just wanted to add that in the episode sidebar for Nu-Bo-; that since katakana is used for what are called by the Japanese, "borrow words" (words taken from another language, for ex. "anime" is a borrow word as is "Atom(u)", that his name may be a play-on the French word "nouveau"; making him the "nouveau merchant" or "Nouveau, the merchant"!

As for your other question, isn't Cronipuss, Dr. Sakura from the Black Jack series? I'll try to get back to you about the son because it will take me awhile to translate the kanji used for him.

I believe BJ started in the 1970s, so, unless this guy 1st appeared elsewhere, he originated here. Thanks for your help!

Anyone know the names of the fairy boy and tin soldier robots in the first episode? Both original names and dub names.
I'm on Twitter.

The little boy with the large bow goes nameless in this episode. The extras in the American boxed set featured #1 in Japanese with E subs, but neither character was named. Though when we next see the robot circus come to town (in #48, Tenma Tribe; ELV: "Great Space Horse"), he is identified as J: 'Piko' & E: 'Tiny'; though in other episodes, he is 'Piko' & "Pal Pog" (65 & E 56). 90, Robot fortress (81, Mystery of Amless Dam), again 'Piko' but E: "Pee Wee."

Note that Hamegg & A circus appeared in #47 COSMIC CRAB, but no robots were shown in that circus. :astro:

So, the boy is
#1: not named
48: 'Piko' & 'Tiny'
65: 'Piko' & "Pal Pog" Parents" 'Porgy' & 'Bess' ("Mr. Pog" & "Bibby Pog")
81: 'Piko' & "Pee Wee"
:p

Didn't the Tin Soldier Robot also appear in another episode and was named?

He probably DID appear in #48, but I have no mention of his name in my notes.

Okay you caught me on that one! I knew he was not the character from Black Jack. Just thought I'd test you. Besides I just thought that they might be relatives cause they have a slight resemblance. (They're both ugly! I know that's not nice to say, but it is true!)

Any way, sorry it took so long to get back to you, but the only time I had any free time to look up the info for your request was on the weekend.
Any way after spending a couple of hours going through my different dictionaries I finally found something that makes sense after I realized that the character was given a proper Japanese surname and to make a long story short, Cronipuss is known by the Japanese surname of Tsukioka.

I  :astro: :)
