I hear there's an episode of the 60s series that Tezuka hated so much that he had the negatives destroyed but not before it got sent to America to be dubbed. What is this episode?

That episode is "The Beast from 20 Fathoms" aka "Midoro Swamp". The episode was known as "lost" because for awhile no Japanese version could be found, and the only copy known to exist was the English version.
The original Japanese soudtrack has been found and it is included as a special feature in one of the Ultra collector's editions of the 1960s DVD box set. (I believe it's included in box set #2.)

The story, as explained in the box set is that Dr. Tezuka had commissioned a group of young anime artists to adapt his story, "Midoro Swamp". Tezuka is said to have hated the job done by these young professionals that he had all copies of the episode (or so he thought) destroyed!

When the search began to preserve all the episodes of 1960s Astro Boy on DVD, the Japanese soudtracks were found. I believe in some vault somewhere!

I  :astro: :)

Well in the original version Astro's brother Cobalt died. He redid and republished the manga ending version so that Cobalt would live. I dunno why he destroyed the anime version, but I assume in the English dub they edited it out anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.

In the anime version of "Midoro Swamp" aka "The Beast from 20 Fathoms", Jetto aka Cobalt does not appear.

As for why he had the episode destroyed. In the commentary included with the restored Japanese version in the 1960s DVD collector's boxset, they state that Tezuka was very unhappy with the results, as he had farmed this episode out to a group of, at the time manga artists who wanted to get into animation and he just did not like the job they did.
