This question came up to me just occasionally, but I still wanna share information with you foreingers(quite different from other Chinese girls, aha?) Since astro is in essence a machine, his body structure, organ functions, and metabolic base must be different from human,in my opinion ;) . ①Human as well as other animals need different food as basic living material, hence evolving into an appetite system in responce to healthy and needed food. But Astro Boy don't need ordinary food but energy resourse,so pleast imagine his appetite? What will he feel at the desk full of delicious human food and will he feel physiological hunger in the case of a full stock of robotic resources? ②Astro's skins are made up of synthenic skins, which is far more cast-iron than humans even can stand explosions. What will he feel if he is splashed by boiled water and what protections will he need when he is performing tasks in freezing South Pole? :astro: ③How much sleep does he need a day? ④Can he smell things ⑤Can he detect ultrasonic and mini-electronicity etc(physical thread that must use machines to detect? ⑥In 1980 cartoon,we have witnessed Astro diving deep into the marine bottom. What if Astro is hurt, and ,if that is the case, how can this little machine prevent from short circuit from water and salt? If any of you have problems about his physiologics or want to answer ,please answer me soon. ;)

3) how much sleep does Astro need a day?

I am not sure how long but I know that in the 2003 cartoon he needs to sleep to get all of his memories thinked through.
In the 1980 he fell asleep in the episode Pelegro Island in his classroom because he went out at night to save a girl and her grandad. I think he was alsleep because he was low on energy or that he has been out all night.
In the 1960 I am unsure

I hope I helped :)

In the 1960's series, I believe he rests but does not dream (as per episode #72) The Dream Machine

I don't think the prerequisite for functional Artificial Intelligence includes sexual organs, however, I'm sure A.I does replicate emotions otherwise experienced from the  .

Due to Astro's suggested age, as AstroBoy03 responded, he is just a little boy, so I doubt it goes as far as a crush.

Sorry to say that, but on number 22 of the Dark Horse manga edition, there are two what-if stories where :tezuka: plays with the idea of making Astro sensible to the s-word. One, written as a satire for a newspaper, deals with Ochanomizu trying to make Astro more "human", and as such have some new Instincts. At the end he is arrested by Inspector Tawashi while being in an illegal *ehem* flat crowded with young beautiful ladies who work on the oldest job ever.

And in another one, only two pages long and very humorous, like the other one, Astro sits on a bank and watches a young, beautiful lady. They fall in love at first sight and kiss passionately until they both short-circuit and blow away (she's a robot, too). In the last panel, it is revealed it was an experiment about how Astro would react to a love relationship. Ochanomizu states something like: "No, he isn't prepared for this kind of love".

So, though you're all right, the possibility is wide open.

Ochanomizu says "guess they didn't go about it the right way...i should've showed them this first.."
