I know I've seen people mention this before, and I figured that maybe there should be a thread to discuss this.
For those not in the know, I've seen a lot of people state that they would want a continuation of the 03 series. As a result, I've seen what people have suggested, and making a thread to store those ideas makes perfect sense in my mind.
So, I ask the question;
What would you like to see in an 03 series continuation?
To be honest, I wouldn't want an outright sequel series. This might sound odd, but I think that the conclusion to the robot vs. human arc tied everything up so nicely that there's not much else to go on that aside from people adjusting to robots having similar rights.
What I do feel has much more to go on is Astro and Tenma's relationship, which given how ther series ends, has loads of potential to go from.
Anmd that's ultimately what I want; not an outright sequel series, but a sequel OVA series of sorts (maybe three or four episodes long).
I've only figured out the basic plot line, but it would take place sometime after Tenma has been released from prison. He's doing fine, but he has been having trouble adjusting to society after spending so much time in prison. It's not entirely troubling for him as Astro comes to visit him when he has any time, but O'Shay/Ochanimizu is still wary of Tenma despite Astro's objections to teh contrary.
During this, some type of crisis breaks out, and they need both Astro and O'Shay/Ochanimizu to investigate what's going. Of course, they're going to need someone else to coem along with them, and Astro suggests Tenma, much to his guardian's dismay.
This I think would work because logically, it would be the next step for these three characters and their relationships with one another.
Astro and Tenma's characters arcs would be intertwined given that they want the same thing, though they end worrying about different subjects entirely during the story. Their relationship has improved sicne the end of the series, but Tenma is still worried that he hasn't found his place in society despite having regained his sanity somewhat. Astro worries about this too, but is also concerned as to whether or not his two "father's" can ever get along.
Given Tenma's actions towards the end of the series, O'Shay/Ochanimizu is still worried that Tenma may hurt Astro, and thus is still wary of trusting him. Throughout the OVA, they'd wouldn't exactly be on good terms (squabblign with each other and what have you). Eventually though, it would end with O'Shay/Ochanimizu learning to trust in his former college a little more, and vise versa. Their relationship woudn't be mended entirely, but it would be a start.
As far as writers go, I'd want Konaka to write the story. In fact, I'd be happy just knowing that he was head-of-story even if he didn't write teh episodes himself.
What do you guys think?

Thanks April, do you have anything you'd like to see in a sequel to the 03 series?
Also, when I reference Konaka, I mean Chiaki J. Konaka, who was one of the writers on the 03 series (and was the head of story for the series if I'm not mistaken). For point of refernce, some of Konaka's better known projects would include Serial Experiments Lain, and Digimon Tamers.

Thanks. It only makes sense to me from a logic stand-point; Tenma has spent so much time trying to destory the world he felt he no longer belonged in, that he would have issues trying to adjust to being given a second chance at life.
I don't know; I think it wold be easier for Astro and Tenma to get along, even if they still have some little bumps on the road to a better relationship. O'Shay/Ochanimizu and Tenma, ehe, not so easy. But that's ultimately feel why a story like that should end with them at least knowing they can work together. Agfter all, they'd probably both want what's best for Astro at that point. And who knows, future stories could delve into that and show that they're growing closer at colleges because of their love for Astro.

That was my first thought, but it's weird, without actually trying to put it into words as you did here, I totally tried to imagine Tenma's future a little bit after watching that last episode. It makes me

I would also like a prequel, I would like to actually see what happened in between Astro's birth and the time he gave up on him.

I know what you mean; I'd like to think that he would probably end up working at the Ministry again, though even that might take some time as nothing happens overnight.
As far as a prequel goes, the major I want answered is just how much time passes between Tenma's disapperance, and Astro's awakening. I would assume a year, but O'Shay/Ochanimizu becomes head of the Ministry maybe two or three months after he disappears, and he discovers Astro not too long after that.
Also, there's a few other things I've come up with to flesh out the story;
.Tenma has actually been managing a small robot repair shop out of his home. he makes decent money, but feels that he still hasn't quite found his new reason for living just yet
.The reason behind the mission is that a new strain of spider-like robots have been infecting the people of Metro City. It affects them by entering their minds and knocking them unconscious, trapping their subconscious in their greatest fears
.The robots location is in a small tropical island off the pacific coast. Naturally, O'Shay/Ochanimizu dresses light for the ocassion, but Tenma pretty much wears one of his usual long coats, much to both Astro and O'Shay/Ochanimizu's surprise
.The villain in question turns out to be Pavlos, wanting "vengeance" yet again. O'Shay/Ochanimizu however, only finds this out once he gets captured by Pavlos in teh early morning hours while on the island.
.Pavlous tells his old comrad his plan; to infect so many people in Metro City and blame the robots for what's happened, making them question if robots really should have the same rights as humans. Shortly after, he infects O'Shay/Ochanimizu with the robot, but is soon rescued by Astro and Tenma
.Despite being worried, Astro goes back to stop the invasion while Tenma works to save O'Shay/Ochanimizu
.Eventually, he realizes that the only way to stop teh robots is to override their system, by overcoming ones fear. Allowing himself to become infected, he links minds with his comrad. Since their fears are somewhat similar (losing Astro), he manages to snap O'Shay out of it nd override teh bugs sustems in both their minds. Though shortly after, Tenma collapses from exhaustion (having tried to fight off the robots affects was too much for him to take)
.Eventually, O'Shay/Ochanimizu thanks tenma for savign him, though he explains taht he only did it for Astro. Despite that though, he is surprised ot see his old colleage being a little less hostile towards him as a result, and they shake hands in friendly remorse

My memory of the 2003 series is sadly fading (I'm actually trying to remember a few details to reply in the O/T role play, because I know I'm supposed to recall a little more about "that day" than I do!
). This discussion makes me want to watch the key episodes once again, I'll try to do that during the holidays.
Would anybody ever trust him however, after he almost destroyed it?
Perhaps he could have his own shop on the side as you suggested yourself, but then of course he would not have the means to support his incredible abilities.
I think I had wondered if he had been in jail or if he was in a mental hospital. If it's the latter, after a long therapy, perhaps he could be deemed cured, and allowed to work to the ministry again.
I would like to see Tenma's mind evolve in that time frame.
I know that what goes on from Astro's birth and Tenma giving up has been covered in other series or in the manga, but I would still like to see it from the 2003 series perspective. It wouldn't have to be a repetition anyway.
Those would make for a great fanfic!
I think I'd personally like to see Tenma work more closely with Astro than with O'Shay however, it would move me a lot more. That scene at the end of the 2003 gets me every time
and I would long to see more interaction in between them in the event of a sequel.
