I don't think it was Fred Ladd always talked about the Western release of Astro Boy but it was only in the US as far as i know at the time NBC Enterprises sold it to independent local TV stations across the States but in the process it was also sold to Mexico.

with Kimba it was somewhat diffrent because that was sold later to many other countries.

Just out of curiosity, do you personally know or have chatted with Fred Ladd, Astro Boy's "godfather" about this subject or were you just quoting Mr. Ladd from something you read? If the latter, would you please tell me exactly where you read this information? I am just curious, because it seems to me, at least, that the Astro Boy series should be sold in Mexico and not to the USA's English speaking neighbor to the North! Especially since the Astro Boy series was sold to the UK!

And do you mean the 1963 series was sold to the UK ? etleast it wasn't at the same time because it's no where to find.
I do know about film producer Stanley Kubrick who after seeing Astro Boy wanted to hire Tezuka for the film a 2001 space Odyssey in 1968 and he was in the UK but apart from that i don't think it was sold anywhere else.

According to the book, "The Encyclopedia of TV Science Fiction" by Roger Fulton (1997 edition) 26 episodes of the original Astro Boy series aired in the UK from June 17, 1964 to December 16, 1964. I know that it aired in Melbourne, Australia beginning in April, 1966 according to Glen Johnson's 60's Anime website, so I am pretty sure it was sold to Canada at some point. Most US programs end up in Canada at some point, for ex. did you know that the original "Star Trek" series actually premiered in Canada a day before it premiered in the US? And yes I own a copy of Fred Ladd's book. As matter of fact on page 48, Ladd states and I quote, "Astro Boy, Gigantor and to a lesser extent, 8th man achieved astonishing success upon their release to television in the Western Hemisphere." Last time I looked Canada was part of the Western Hemisphere. So apparently it was sold to Canadian television. Now as to how many episodes or how popular it was in Canada in the sixties that I am not sure, But according to Ladd, Astro Boy "achieved astonishing success..."

I  :astro:

I think that the mere use of the term WESTERN HEMISPHERE cannot be assumed to include ALL nations therein, or even all English-speaking ones. I am not saying Canada was excluded, but only that we cannot know from this alone. It is a generalization, rather than an explicit reference to all nations in it. I recall seeing a map somewhere, perhaps during the 1960s series, they showed it to indicate all the nations that had imported the series. I remember discussing it here, but not when.

In the 2nd of 3 opening sequences, Atom flies around the world with Uran, passing major landmarks that I assume indicate those nations had imported the series. :astro:

Okay, then on this map you refer to did it appear to include Canada.

I feel that from the use of the phrase "Western Hemisphere" by Mr. Ladd, he meant to include all of the countries in that hemisphere. Why else use that particular phrase?

I agree, that, that alone would not be conclusive evidence. It just seems so unlikely, that given the mutual relationship of buying films and TV programs from each other, that the U.S. and Canada have, that NBC Enterprises would fail to sell what was then a hot property to their neighbor to the North.

Of course one other way to conclusively answer this question, would be that given the age of most members of this site, that some one Canadian ask their parents, if they remember seeing "Astro Boy" in their youth, if their "youth" happened to be in the 1960s and let us know.

Here is something interesting! Just out of curiosity I googled "History of Astro Boy on Canadian TV" and lo and behold at a website called "Meta filter" (http://www.metafilter.com/24935/Happy-Birthday-Astroboy) some one posted the fact that "astroboy aired on canadian tv during the 60's and 70's (weekend mornings mostly)"
[posted by t r a c y at 9:20 AM on April 7, 2003]

So, I believe that is proof positve that the original "Astro Boy" series did in fact air in Canada in the 1960s.

ASTROBUDDY, I cannot recall where or when I saw the map. :hyo:

 your argument for use of this term relies on a universally inclusive definition; if even 1 tiny nation did not take the show, your use of the term is fallacious. :p I am not arguing against the reasonable assumption that WESTERN HEMISPHERE includes Canada, only that, it cannot be presumed to include all elements. It is usually used only in a general sense. :D However, I think Ladd probably did use it intending to include Canada, because Canada is a major nation. It should have been rather easy to state that Canada was not among those nations that took the show; I think that if some S American nation was excluded, he would not have been too bothered by the apparent all-inclusive term, as he would have been about Canada. :hyo:
