Sometimes I like to browse the web in Japanese, at some point I stumbled upon Astro Boy's robot parents' names this way. Astro's Papa called エタノール (Ethanol) and Astro's Mama called リン (Rin). I think they are interesting names as ethanol and rin are both words that can relate to atoms and/or chemicals. The Japanese word rin can also be spelled 燐, which is the kanji for phosphorus.

However I question where the source is because it is never mentioned anywhere, no matter how many times I come across the names. Perhaps they are made up and mistaken for their real names? Or maybe there is an obscure source that would reveal the origin of the names? Can anyone think of where the names came from? Maybe I've not looked hard enough... But I'd love it if these were genuinely their names, they're so fitting in my opinion.

Finding these names has made me curious about any other names the robot parents may have had in other languages as well.


(I made a thread like this last year, but a server crash in November erased the whole thing. So I am making it again, I hope this is okay.)

i read one off astroboy's comic books, i read it said his mom's name was hoshi(star) tenma.

The robot parents are defensive of Astro in their own way, I think. But it would be nice to see more.

That is his human mother, whom seems a lovey character. But, I'm talking about the robot parents who are usually simply called Mama and Papa.

no, i saw in the comics. dr. tenma stole the mother robot and told her the new name.hoshi tenma.

- and she's right, in the manga Tenma does steal Astro's robotic mother and basically trains her to become Hoshie (and he did call her that, I'm quite sure). Poor Tenma!! He rebuilt his deceased wife and son!!

Ooh, forgive my confusion guys. I was hoping she had a name of her own, but that does make sense for manga Mama. I do know the manga story a bit, but did not consider Doctor Tenma would also name her after his family. It is interesting. Thanks.

Astro's parents name were called Gédéon and Suzanne in the French version.

I never heard of any proper names, other than Hoshie, until you mentioned them here. Can you give us the source for this?
