Okay this suggestion is based on the 1980's version of Astro's story, where his blueprints were stolen by Skunk, and the only difference between the two robots (besides outward appearance) was the Omega Factor (and the embarrassing eighth special power for Atlas)

If this is true, imagine please . . . (:eek

1. Astro takes his inability to grow into his own hands and builds himself a new, adult body. I wonder what kind of hair strategy he'd cook up for himself

2. Astro builds a mighty robotic version of Jump to be his animal companion. After all, an organic pet would be too much aggravation to deal with!

3. Astro would rebuild Nikki and - consider what happened to Livian - she'd be retooled as a "blonde bombshell" in a revealing one-piece bodystocking with high-heeled boots. :d evil:

4. Astro would create his own sanctuary where he could get away from it all. Hmm . . . for some reason, I envision him taking over the Ministry of Science and keeping both Tenma and Ochanomizu locked in there for repairs and upgrades as needed.

5. Astro would barely tolerate Uran and his robotic parents as goody-two-shoes. Right? They'd become annoying to him; always trying to dissuade him from persuing his plans to become a benevolent dictator of the world.

What do you think? Got any other Astro-unleashed visions?

Add the Oedipus complex, & you just might have it. Little Atlas becomes big atlas, rebuilds Livian, & dresses her in a negligee. Atlas takes Livian from mother-figure to common-law wife, kills Guiss. Oedipus, in a nutshell.

I thought astro was totlhenchey unrestricted by his programming.

he hit badguys all the time in the 1963 anime and also in the lightray robot in the 1980s anime he smacked 2 of skunk's henchmen together and wraped a peace of steel bar around skink's neck, he just generaly chooses not to hurt people.

@ diehard67 - Astro follows the "Robot Laws" for the most part (which essentially means he is programmed to not hurt humans, etc.)

Tenma rejected building the "omega factor" into Astro in the first episode of the 1980's series. This device actually makes a robot "more" human, because it doesn't restrict their AI in any way. Therefore they can develop into beings capable of crime, murder, extortion, etc.

Guiss and Skunk sent insect-size drones into the MOS and scanned Astro's complete plans, so when Atlas was built - he was literally Astro's twin brother except for Atlas possessing the Omega Factor. Atlas grew up hating humans (Skunk and Guiss were NOT good parents!). Only Livian showed him kindness.

What's interesting is that the most "Astro-like" part of his personality (IMHO) is his dedication to Livian.

And I'd say the most "Atlas-like" part of Astro is his unstoppable determination.

Of course, this whole topic applies only to the 1980's version of Astro

I RECALL HAVING thoroughly siscussed the Omega factor on my T-in-E page for ELEPHANT PURA-CHAN (LITTLE ELEPHANT PURA). But, the new site needs much work, & I cannot find the URL for this page.

I hope you can locate that page, because I'd enjoy reading your thoughts on this.

It seems Tezuka openly embraced Star Wars, and I suppose that's not surprising as Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) cited how "Japanese" the stories and characters were. Hamill spent part of his childhood in Japan ("Army brat").

I wonder if Lucas is a Tezuka fan...

As I understand it, the film HIDDEN FORTRESS inspired the characters R2D2 & C3PO. In this film, two farmers had sold their farming implements and bought weapons & had joined an army, hoping to walk away with some spoils of war. But, instead, their side was routed, and they barely escaped. They met Toshiro Mifune's character, who might be the inspiration for Obi Wan, & he took advantage of their ignorance & naiveté. He used them to smuggle the losing side's princess out of the war zone & to freedom. The princess was anything but lady-like. She was a Tomboy through & through, & likely inspired Pr. Leia's character. The two farmers were anything but cooperative, when they finally realized the girl was a princess, they hoped to turn her in for a reward.

I don't know how far you have made it into the series, but by "The Anti-Proton Gun" and "Atlas Forever", at least, some scenes are reminiscent of Star Wars (or so I've been told in one case, since I don't know Star Wars too well).
