Episode 62
Atom doing an inside loop in flight.

Opps I see you listed that one, but used both Japanese and English episode numbers.

Great thread!! I have to wonder, thought . . . how the :d evil: can he see what he's shooting at??

I suggest Atom as "stealth eyes" on his butt too . . . or at least the back of his head!"

Thank's Jeffbert. I'll have to look at those again. I know I read SOMEWHERE that Ladd had edited out the machine guns, but I guess he didn't get them all. Maybe in some shots they were more 'comical' than violent. Sorta like the way the Robot in "Robo-cop" was 'funny' when it kept on shooting and shooting and shooting and shooting! (If they had cut that scene short it would have been gruesomely violent, but by going 'overkill' it wasn't. Weird.)

EDIT: OK I guess Jeffbert was looking at the Japanese dubbed version. Unless Manga re-edited the English version they uploaded to youtube, Episode 57 IS MISSING the guns and Atom's somersault but you see the 'blast'. I assume Manga has uploaded the same video that Right Stuf has.

I'll have to look at the others you mentioned. However, I'm beginning to think what I heard was quite correct.

Now I'm wondering if I can find some examples of other Astro aerobatics. I bet there's an Immelman turn in there somewhere. (Yes, I have a private pilot's license)

BTW April7, I was trying to figure where your current Avatar came from. I finally spotted it from the opening of the 2003 Astro Anime. Only thing is, I'm not sure that it is IN the English dubbed opening, I KNOW it is in the Japanese version.

Edit: Episode #53 is missing the shot you provided. It has this one:

This is an interesting topic! Especially since they were so prominently displayed in the 2009 feature!

If I remember correctly, in at least one of the English dubbed episodes from the 60s, they are explained as being from his "hips"!

I  :astro: :)

In the two shot's I uploaded, you CAN imagine them as being located at his hips. It's hard to see exactly where the gun barrels start. In some of the episodes they show the reports as gun shots, in others they look more like lasers firing. (Star Trek has the same error, in some shows the phaser fire looked more like 'photon torpedoes'.)

THE LIST ABOVE is based on the captures that had appropriately named copies in an IMAGES folder. If I omitted making such a copy, I was unable to include the episode in the list. I just now did new captures for !145 ATOM IN THE DEEP SEA, & it has a wonderful example:

Wow. XD

Ah, the Immelman Turn... I learned about that on an episode of Game Theory explaining the Star Fox "barrel rolls".

These are definitely my favorite weapons. Every time he uses them it just looks adorable to me. Idk

Yeah, he just sticks out his fanny... it's amazing just how practical such an amusing weapon choice turned out to be! Maybe Tezuka felt he needed to come up with a practical excuse for such a bizarre weapon location... A reason besides his rather corny sense of humor.
