Plain and simple if there were no western version of TetsuWan Atom there would be no fandom of Tezuka's characters outside of Japan!

After all the name of this website is "ASTRO BOY--ON LINE", not "TetsuWan Atom(u)--on line.

Much of what has become popular with Astro Boy was because of what was added to the character's show to make him popular to audiences outside of Japan.

very true indeed! I would have never found about Astro boy or any other of Tezuka's works w/o taking another look at the Astro boy 2009 movie. I'm soo glad I decided to watch it again and then take a look at the 2003 series on Netflix.

Though, I'm sticking with the original Japanese version for the 80s series, seeing as how the English dub made me a bit upset. ( same goes for the 90s Black Jack english dub as well. I like the original Japanese dub! :]!)

It puzzles me that any one could find the 1980s Astroboy "upsetting" as it is virtually a complete translation of the Japanese version and not an adaptation like the 1960s American dub which added, adapted and removed items to appeal to an international audience, (unless of course you refer to the Canadian dub), but no matter.

I feel that since Dr. Tezuka, himself was pleased with the American additions to his work, that is yet another reason to love "Astro Boy", the western version of "TetsuWan Atom(u)!"

Oh, its not like I hate it or anything, its just that I couldn't stand the voice acting (Yah, couldn't stand the voice acting of the western BJs ethier.) and I didn't like how they combined two episodes together.

That's why it upsetted me. End of story.

Understandable. I know some people find different voices annoying. For ex. I am not that fond of either lead actress' voice for the official 1980s English dub or the 2004 English dub, but I try not to let that distract me from enjoying the adventures. I understand also about the 1980s "two into one" edit. Unfortunately that is a sign of the period in which it was done. Maybe in some future time the episodes can be restored in the way the original "King Kong" and "Frankenstein" were restored! Of course this may be less likely, but at least we can still enjoy the originals on Viki.

I love the Western version of the 2003 Astro Boy because it validated that family is not about blood or creation but about love and effort. I also really liked the idea of Atlas/Daichi always being a robot and not a replica.

But all versions do the same thing, from the GAS PEOPLE comic, in which Atom's parents debut, to episode 165, A Great Fuss Over Babies, the same thing is made clear.

But it was more validated and showcased in the ELV of the 2003 Astro Boy series especially in the final episode. In the original Japanese version Atom does make it clear that Dr. Tenma is indeed his father when click for spoilerAtom embraces him and says "please don't die father" but in the ELV it is somewhat different as Atom says "I forgive you" and then Tenma realizes that he's not fit to be a father. It's true that he loves him, but he's not the father that Atom needs and thus realizes that Ochanomizu is the better parent

I always liked the ELV version better than the Japanese in regards to the 2003 series for this reason and my perspective of Atlas.

I admit that the original Japanese version of the 1980s series is better and I like it better. I can't say with any true certainty though about the 1960s version though as I have only seen a handful of the original Japanese episodes, though I do love the ELVs as well. They are a joy! And I love Billie's voice for Atom.
