Astro Boy is given a serious edge in the latest issue of Anime Busience.

Volume 3 of the new anime and manga magazine Anime Busience released this past week featured a special surprise for fans of Astro Boy. Katsuhiro Otomo, best known for his critically acclaimed work Akira, illustrated a special homage to the robotic marvel, in honor of his creator Osamu Tezuka, the god of manga. His rendition of the classic hero gave it a certain edge that could only belong to Otomo.

Otomo himself was previously honored on the cover of Anime Busience with a drawing of the main character of his masterpiece Akira by Neon Genesis Evangelion's character designer, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. Otomo's latest animated feature, Short Peace is set to hit theaters in North America this April.

This latest edition of Anime Busience also features a number of different articles, including a special memorial conversation between Mamoru Hosoda, Shinji Higuchi, and Keiichi Hara about animation expert Yasuki Hamano. Hamano, who was a professor at Tokyo University and scholar of anime and manga,passed away this past January of a stroke.

I remember seeing this on Tumblr, this is great.

Thanks for the post! It's always great to see great artists paying respect for such an iconic character

Not sure about that rendition of Bem though :T

Love to see renowned artist's like this giving Dr. Tezuka some love. Love Astro's heart in his hand.

Yeah. I know in the manga Bem was gender neutral but they did NOT have breasts, so it's not a gender issue but a design issue for me.

It's good quality though. I like the silver arms.

Okay . . . so why is Astro wearing "Grampa pants?" hmmmm? :lol:

It's like somebody gave him a wedgie and he LEFT them there - he . . . has no CHEST to speak of! I do like the heart in hand, but just don't think the elongated shorts and belt going up to chest level is . . . . appealing. At. All.

I think he should draw :astro:

Atom's hair is a bit weird too, it looks like a candy.

Still, it's good to see such famous artists paying respects to Astro Boy and Tezuka, even if their designs and art style might put some people off.

One thing I do like is the color pallet, I love these soft colors.

Still looks very good although really different, Tezuka claimed to be a Otomo fan so there's so surprise there and i'm sure it was the other way around even more so.
