Chaplin's THE CIRCUS, inspiration for Hamegg's ringmaster?

I saw this film a year or so ago, & noted the Ringmaster's especially cruel treatment of a female performer who had merely goofed during a performance. I immediately took note of it, & naturally wondered if Tezuka used it as inspiration for Hamegg's ill-treatment of Atom after he refused to destroy his opponent.

Oh, yes, the ringmaster deprived the girl of her supper, & was very strict in charging other performers not to share their dinner with her.

BTW, TCM will show this film Thursday about 1:30 PM.

Tezuka was notorious for taking inspiration from other things so I think it's very possible. I think I have this movie in a boxset of Chaplin's films, I'll see if I can check it out as that time on TCM is not possible for me.

Please do, & I would really like to see your comments on the similarities I noted, Earthshine!
