Here is a frame from the Japanese version of Episode #1 that wasn't seen in the ELV, because the language is in Japanese. Note the date on the page for Astro's sale to Hamegg. This fits the ELV idea that he was created in the year 2000, not 2003. Besides this scene took place a few years after he was 'born'

Can anybody translate this?

BTW, the very first time Atom is seen wearing his boots is in the circus, so I guess Hamegg gave them to him for the show.

I also remember that he had a serial number... C-8, right?

Yes, that is what the sub said (I caught the frame without it). Guess you own the same DVD collection or had access to it. I just got the first set today.

Oh goodness, no; I sincerely wish, though!

I watched it in like, three parts when someone uploaded it to Youtube years ago. It's gone now, but I remember that much.

Come to think of it, it's really remarkable that Japanese versions of the ones that made it into the English dub exist. I found an article, pretty old one, mind, that basically said that most of the originals were destroyed, in an era that did not place much importance upon such things. Japan didn't want the films they sent in back, or something to that effect, and NBC didn't need'em anymore, so they were either tossed or destroyed, from my understanding. A crying shame, but what are ya gonna do...

(This is mildly upsetting, though; this means that unless it still exists somewhere- and that's a pretty big "if"- I'll never get to see the original dub for the episode "Cobalt". :T I still don't understand why no one saw the need to sub the rest of the collection- granted, a lot of them were repeats, essentially! But one of those "recycled plot" episodes supposedly still made it into the English dub along with the original...)

If you mean the 'brother jetto' episode, yes the Japanese episode DOES exist. There are Japanese DVD sets for the entire 193 episodes available from Japan. There are 2-4 episodes missing, where only the sound track remains along with some still frames for those, but those are NOT among the 104 that were translated into English. If I had the 800 bucks to burn on it, the set is available on Amazon Japan!

BTW every now and then a 16mm film copy for one of the Astro Boy episodes shows up on eBay. I noticed one up there about a year or so ago, and someone reported it here. Those are probably dug up from a graveyard TV station's warehouse when they clean house.

Okay, so, remember that time when that one person showed us that one episode off of one of those sets you mentioned, and it was in English for some reason?

As I recall, they only had ripped the 'missing' episodes. This would be a good question for Jeffbert, I think he owns the entire 193 episode set.

I remember seeing it up there once, Double Trouble, and as it appeared in the English dub... But that's a good idea. If it's not true, then there's hope for us yet- albeit an incredibly faint hope, especially considering Anime Sols seems to have tanked...

Oh BTW, the ELV box set #1 I got has some images on the bonus disk of all the characters as drawn by the animators. Including Chi-tan who wasn't even in any of the ELV episodes.
