One of "The 89" - #174 The Great Submarine Canal

Based on the timing of the two series, I figured it had to be one of the missing 89.

You probably did. It was the episode where the ranger took Kimba to Paris and they visited a museum. There was an exhibit showing a possible future with a display of robots. As the camera panned to the left from one robot to the next I KNEW what was coming up!

Take a look at my signature below. That color image of Astro comes from that episode.

Was that the first color appearance of Astro Boy?

Maybe. There was one episode of the 1963 series that was made in color, but never broadcast that way. This episode is in the 'right stuf' DVD collection. A movie ('the brave in space') was made using parts of that and a few other episodes, THAT might have been in color.

There was also an episode ('last day on earth') that was made in psuedo color, again not broadcast that way, but it IS on the DVD collection.

After those, then the first time Astro was seen on TV in color would be that Kimba episode.
