Noh Uno's name pronunciation?

I'm not that familiar with the 1963 series, so I need a bit of help here...

How do you pronounce Noh Uno's name?

I've been reading [url=http://www.astroboy-online.com/wiki/darkhorse/volume_2]The Third Magician[/url] for the first time ever lately (albeit very slowly :lol , but I noticed that, in the Dark Horse manga, his name is explicitly shown to be pronounced the same as "know you know".

So, I have to ask: is that the way his name is pronounced in the English dub of the 1963 series? Is that how his name is pronounced in the Japanese version of the manga and Japanese version of the 1963 series? Since I first saw the character's name I've always pronounced it like the word "no" followed by the way you would pronounce the card game's name and the Spanish word for one, "uno".

I guess Tezuka was a fan of Abbot and Costello (who's on first?).

It might be, 'No U-know'. The 'h' maybe silent. But without taking the hint into consideration, I would have pronounced his name as, 'No U-no'.

i AM UNSURE OF WHERE Schodt got "Noh Uno", but the guy has an entirely different name in Japanese.

I wonder what the original joke was in that scene. Maybe "Noh Uno" was a name that was just made up to get the gist of what was going on between Mustachio and Tawashi. If that's the case, then it's probably pronounced No You Know, so the mix-up is less of a stretch.

So, I just found the 1963 English dub of The Three Magicians on Hulu, and it turns out Noh Uno's name is in fact not Noh Uno, but J. C. Tenpercent.

From what you guys are discussing, I'm guessing "Noh Uno" must be pronounced "know you know" then, which is kind of a bummer, because "no uno" sounds much better in my opinion. Oh well.

Also, thank you Jeffbert for getting his Japanese name. I think you're right that his name is Akano ta Jin. Information on him is really scarce on the internet, so its hard to confirm, but from what I can tell, Akano ta Jin is correct. I don't think the Google Translation "Akano multi-jin" is correct though.

I wonder the same thing. It's probably something that would seem more humorous to those who understand Japanese.

Ladd changed all of the names around when he created the ELV of the anime. Many of the names were puns or jokes on the character's appearance.
OTOH Schodt kept most of the original Japanese names using a close Romanji spelling. In some cases where a character's name was a pun (which wouldn't translate into english) he substituted a similar pun for the name. Maybe that's what happened here. He also made use of nicknames, 'Mustachio' being a prime example. The only character whose name he did not keep the original Japanese name, but used the English one was Astro, and as he pointed out Atom and Astro were close enough, and everyone in the US already knew him as Astro. (Paraphrased from the introduction to the DH manga books).

This doesn't say "Akano ta jin" it says "Akano Ta NIN"

The kanji is correct, just incorrect pronunciation.
