I've never been in that sort of situation, mostly because i've always moved town every few years so i've never been able to acutally know anybody for more than a few years.

But I always tried to just ignore negative emotions, a friend is going to eventually say something, nothing can ever be perfect the entire time. But when the time comes you feel the friendship between you and someone else is being strained. You need to deal with it, i've seen people go from friends to enemies in the space of a few minutes, and it's stupid how the best of friends can just give each other the cold shoulder and stop acknowledging each others existance.

You may get hurt, but the emotion will only last for a little while, and a good friendship can last many years. Don't let it swallow you up, forgive and realise the other person made a mistake. They probably know they made a mistake and would be feeling bad themselves.

I hope that made sense.

I am at a laus for words now, I detected a friend hurting and can't think of anything to say to make her feel better.

of corse it didn't help much that A) I am dealing woth depression and angsiety problems my self and my emotions can run away with themselfs, kinda makes if hard to find a situation in my own life for in order for me to empithise, B) during the search my emotions get all screwed up from passing over memories of reasint events that I am still vary chocked over...... don't ask....... there has been enought circus ofer that alredy.

ok switching into logic mode to try and control emotions.....
first thing I have to say is DO NOT TRY TO SUPRESS THE EMOTION!!!!!!!! this will cause it to come back stronger and will do considerable more harm then good. it might suck to feel sad but you have to feel it intoder for it to go away, I was told in my groupe tharipy sessions that such things should wash over you like a wave, abstract consept that I don't fulley understand.

as other people here have mentioned if you know sombpody long ehough then they will open there mouth and stick there foot right in at sometime in the releationship, althow sometimes they ment what they said but that doesn't meen they ment to hurt with what they said. I don't know your friend so this is juat ransome opinions.

more randomeness
a good solide friendship can recover from such events as long as the ofending words were not ment to damage.

as for that hallow feeling you mentioned, I know exactly what you are talking about, fojr me it feels like there is a vacule in side me, like a black hole or a shopvac hose in it there sucking out my insides, gross I know but it is the closest to what it feels like that I can discribe.

aaaaaaaaa that made a lot of scence

if the ovvending emotion persists long enough it will conse heartbutn in me, it is not bad enough that I feel like crap in between the ears it has to manifest itself in my body as well, atleast my tums are flavered so I don't feel like I am eating 2000 mg of chack, yah that is right I have to take the 1000 mg extra strong tums 2 at a time to get rid of my heartburn from stress.

aaaaaaaaaa my train of thought derailed

anyway I hope you feel better, being sad sucks I know all too well.

Although fear is not the exact emotion here, the litany against fear (in Dune written by Frank Herbert) is what comes in mind here:
I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

You might want to replace the word "fear" by any negative emotion ;)
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.
