New Law on Cyber-bullying

Postby Ghost » 14 years ago

Wow, I'm not sure if everyone knows but there is a new law out there against cyber-bullying that recently went into effect.

People can now actually get jail time for impersonating someone on facebook, or attacking someone on Youtube or anywhere on the internet. It depends on which state you live in and specifics on what the offense is. But it can be a misdemeanor or even can lead a felony. I'm not kidding, I personally think that this a bit ridiculous but what can you do?

I'm against any bullying of any kind but I think it's worse in class rooms if anything. People need to focus more in the classroom then over the internet.

Actually, with places like 4chan being occupied by kids my age, cyber-bullying can get pretty scary now. Such as the case when an eleven-year-old girl provoked some Youtube users, only to get a variety of threats sent directly to her house. (That "YOU DUN GOOFED" fad comes from a video her father made yelling at the attackers.)

Not to mention how on a Facebook page someone made for Spirit Day - back when everybody wore purple for those young gay teens who killed themselves - some of the comments on that page were absolutely rancid. Not to mention certain circumstances involving the internet that some of those kids were involved in...

So, I'm actually pretty happy a law like this exists at least somewhere.

That's why you should never give out personal information on the internets.

Also, people need to relearn the old saying: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

Sure, trolling is fun. BUT, there is a point when it's funny, and a point when it's just hurtful. (Like, Caturday is hilarious, but some other things are not so much) That's not saying that some people don't need to lighten up and junk, but some of the stuff that gets said on facepalm and mywaste is just plain mean.

Hence why I don't use social networks like those. Forums are good enough for me. :tenma:

I think the law could actually do some good. A kid that I know at my school is a victim to cyber bullying and some verbal bullying at school and it happens pretty much everyday, from what I hear. I feel bad for him, but not that bad because he made a hitlist and somehow I wound up on it and this kid is one who would actually go into the school with a gun and kill a bunch of people if he got mad enough and a lot of us are worried about that.

Now that I think of it, there was this one forum that I left where this one guy would get pissed off at everything that I posted. If I would post something and others would say it was really funny, he would somehow say it sucked and get mad at me and I was never sure if he just liked to mess with me, or if he was serious. I'm pretty sure he was trying to mess with the little 12 year old kid because he thought it would be funny, but it was very annoying and it caused me to ditch that forum and I've never visited it ever since(I can't remember the site anyways)
