04 CAMPHOR TREE STORY (W3)

Years before Tezuka even began working on THE LEGEND OF THE FOREST, he made this episode. While LEGEND uses Tchaikovsky's fourth symphony, this uses one of Beethoven's; I believe it is the Pastoral, as it starts serenely then has a thunderous part. The page for The Legend of the Forest even includes a Camphor tree among it character portraits.




This inchworm takes liberties with Pukko!


Fred Ladd's book indicates that W3 was animated in a Disney-like style, & there are more than a few critters that make the case.










Mean ol' hunters kill this duck, and this will cause trouble for Pukko.

To bring you up to date, a construction crew had cleared away the forest, displaced many animals, & now, only this one large tree remains.


















This usually means someone is bribing someone else, and as I do not recall much if any dialogue, I think it also indicates a bribe here.




That one tree is ruining his whole plan! It must go!

Bokko had hypno-eyes long before FUTURAMA's Hypnotoad ever did!






Shinichi tries in vain to reason with the developer.

Then comes the thunder storm, & it destroys everything but the Camphor tree, in which those who remained took shelter.

How many s can you spot in the next 2 images?



This foreground sequence of the crowd fleeing in terror was borrowed from MIGHTY ATOM, where it was used about 6 or 7 times.

Finally, the storm ended, and the only thing left standing was the Camphor tree, which the developer was very glad he had failed to fell.

Now, as Bokko bids adieu to the male usagi,



"Marry me, and I will take you to the Casbah."
Note that one of Melmo's stories also has this element. Coincidentally, the 4th episode The Burning Deserted Island has the widower rabbit fall in love with Melmo who had taken the form of his dead mate.


Bokko decides to wipe his memory, using her reverse wave pistol, but changes her mind.
