This is this kind of reasonning that makes they don't work. If everyone thinks it doesn't work, few people will actually sign ;)
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

I think as long as they're followed up it makes a difference. The person running the petition is supposed to gather all the signatures and send them to the appropriate people (the BBC?).
I'm guessing most of the time this doesn't happen.

It would not help much for a foreigner to sign. The BBC would only be interested in people whom they thought might actually watch these shows in G. Britain; thus also being exposed to advertisements and such. :P

If I lived in the UK I'd sign. I tend not to think these work either but I sign anyway because hey, I could be wrong.
