I know that phpBB version 2, a very popular forum software, is very vulnerable to spambots because of a too weak CAPTCHA system. I know for sure because until recently I had a phpBB 2 test forum running live on a server, that was being hit harder and harder by spambots. I finally grew tired and simply locked away the registration system (hopefully, it wasn't designed to register people anyway).
A good way to block spambots is often to upgrade, since spambots are very vulnerable to changes in forums, even slight ones. More recent versions usually have more efficient CAPTCHA systems too, keeping the hordes outside.
