Dororo manga coming this month.

Postby PuppetMasterKuruku » 17 years ago

Most of you would probably be interested to know that Osamu Tezuka's Dororo is coming to the US this month. From the few sources I could find on the internet, most of the rumor seems to be that the first volume, from the company Vertical Inc, is coming April 28th or 29th, and that each volume will supposedly be 300 or so pages. Another source claimed that the series was three volumes in size and that each volume would be released every two months, in April, June, and August. That's all I know.

As many of you probably know, Dororo never actually had a conclusion, and a Sega adaptation, a game called Blood Will Tell: Tezuka Osamu's Dororo (not a very good game, but it's decently fun and tells a good story.), made an ending up for itself as well as a few changes not present in the manga (such as new characters).

Anyway, it's not the first time that Dororo has hit western shores, but it's the first time the manga has, and with the horrible trend of Tezuka Productions merchandise randomly showing up for about a week and then immediately becoming rare and out of print, it may be the last opportunity for some time, you would do well to check your local book or comic store and try and get a hold of these. On that note, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing Black Jack or Kimba here. Honestly, something like Astro Boy should be a lot more available here, it was a miraculous celebration when I was finally able to get every last volume of Dark Horse's release, it took much scouring the internet and stores.

Don't miss out unless you're really not interested. :)

In the history of its publication in book form, the most recent one was a three volume set, starting with this one:

I have seen the anime & have just ordered it from CDJapan, hope to have it by next week.

Vertical is also going to be releasing Black Jack, right? Any idea when this will be?

^ Are they really? I know that there was once two Black Jack mangas released here, but there were no more after that and they had a limited print. If I remember correctly, it may have been none other than VIZ who published that run. For all intents and purposes, it's like it really never existed and it's desperately in need of being republished.

I don't believe Kimba has ever had a manga release, but we have had several anime released, but none of the 60's series in Japanese. I have Set 1 of RightStuf's Kimba. I got it for cheap as opposed to paying $100 for the complete set online, but I hope they release a Set 2 someday. I'm tempted to just get the ultimate set with all the extras.

As I'm sure many are aware, Unico had a good run here. Many people who have grown up today like myself have fond memories of Unico from their childhoods, as both movies (not including the pilot) were on Disney as well as VHS. The manga may never find it's way into English, unfortunately, but a company called New Galaxy Anime has obtained the rights to release both Unico movies on DVD, starting with the first movie "The Fantastic Adventures of Unico". They will both have English and Japanese audio, and their quality will be much better than what most of us have been enjoying on the internet and our degrading VHS tapes.

If you look at my username and avatar, you'll know quickly that I'm planning on buying a couple hundred copies in case the apocalypse comes. XD

New Galaxy Anime totes itself as ""Shoujo:" shows for girls!". Being a 21 year old male, I wonder if that says anything about my tastes and personality? Are they trying to imply something?

...ANYWAY, the more Tezuka to come here the better. Thankfully we've gotten the 60's, 80's, and the recent series on DVD, as well as Dark Horse's publication of Astro Boy, but this stuff is the best and it's all too hard to find, isn't it? Makes me sick to see every season and manga of DBZ on store shelves, and completely unable to find ANY Black Jack or Unico stuff, and if I'm lucky ONE Astro Boy related thing will be there. I'll just pretend it's hard to find because it's selling like hot cakes! :shifty:

There's a bit more information on the Vertical release of Black Jack in this thread over at TezukaInEnglish.com

Also, you may be interested to know that the Unico manga has been released in French editions. You may or may not understand French, but chances are it'll be more comprehensible than Japanese...

Dororo and BlackJack

Postby Jess » 17 years ago

Hi!
I am new on your site, but I wanted to let you know when things are starting. I am the publicist for Vertical Inc. Feel free to email me about anything, drop me a line or ask a question about a book. (we take suggestions, but getting the rights isn't always easy, but we love to hear opinions!)

Dororo will be available in two weeks, the 29th to be exact. It will be a three volume series, and as stated it was not finished  it leaves more to the imagination! Volume 2 will be out at the end of June and Volume three out at the end of August.

BLACKJACK will be starting in FULL yes folks FULL, not the special edition, limited printed, whatever it was, it is the FULL 17 VOLUMES!!!! So I hope that is on your list! BlackJack will start in the fall, end of September and then the following volumes will come out every other month, so November, January etc.

Since everyone is so interested in these books, maybe I will ask the administrator if they would like to do something like a trivia giveaway, maybe even before it hits the streets if possible :w00t:

And a final, thanks for reading Tezuka. We love hearing that more people in the states are all about it! I hope you all get to enjoy Dororo and BlackJack. And I am going to go do some research on Unico, i'd love that manga to come here!!!!

Welcome to the forum, Jess; we would greatly appreciate your answers to our questions here, rather than in email.

You stated that Dororo was uncompleted; I would not know about this. The Tezuka World page for Dororo 'subtitles' lists 15 chapters or episodes. http://en.tezuka.co.jp/manga/sakuhin/subtitle/m060.html Are all these to be included in the 3 volumes?

Hey Jess, thanks for posting here. Really looking forward to Black Jack and everything else Vertical comes up with. In addition to Tezuka, I would certainly recommend the works of Shotaro Ishinomori, Go Nagai, and Leiji Matsumoto.

Would love to do an interview at some point with someone from Vertical for my website, AstroBoy World. Let me know if you or anyone else from the company is interested!

Sayonara.
