I just finished reading the novel, & am now watching the film for the 2nd time. I think the crediting of Ray Harryhausen in the beginning pretty much indicates that Verne's name was only used to attract viewers. There were no giant crabs, confederate castaways, or women in the novel, but plenty in the film.
